We both received the alert. Of course, my phone was in a different room. Mr A said he thought he'd turned off alerts so he has now turned them off again.
I used the example of people being told to leave their houses due to the approaching flames to suggest to him that "we" should pack bags to be ready to leave in 10 minutes' notice. Little does he know.......

I totally agree... and disagree somewhat with Gerald.Frnc wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2026 2:53 pm Situational awareness is an important part of preparedness — and in my opinion that includes paying attention to official alerts and other information sources.
Good preparedness isn't about relying on a single source of information. It's about building layers of information and having redundancy — your own observations, trusted news and emergency services, community information, and official alerts.
An official alert can provide information you haven't encountered elsewhere, confirm the seriousness or scope of a developing situation, or provide specific advice about what action to take.
That's useful information, whatever else you already know.
The point isn't to know what's happening before everyone else. It's to have enough good information from multiple sources to understand what's happening and make good decisions.
Acknowledged that this alert was trivial and devalues the service, but I would want to see the alarm if next time it's "Satan 11 incoming in ten minutes." Or heaven forbid if anything nasty happened to a world leader
