Well! I'm back on track (and back on line!) after another period of life review.
The "new" pantry area now has makeshift shelving that's already groaning with the weight of the stock (staples only in there and it's already looking tight for space). I've restocked on lots and lots of things I had allowed to run down in recent weeks, such as sugar and laundry supplies. I've taken new stock lists and set up for quick updates to keep on top.
The first earlies are looking good and my onion and garlic bed is the talk of the allotments.... the greenhouse however is a total disaster because I've been a lazy mare in that context.
I've arranged for specialists to come in and fix the damp at the back of the house (£1500), new patio doors to replace the leaky ones in the kitchen (£1100) and a new roof on the extension and old washhouse (£2000) ...... aaaargh! BUT since I'm not going to be working for a while (I've had to resign because i'm really not getting better) the first priority has to be getting the house wind and water tight so that we can batten down the hatches and muddle along as necessary. Because of this I've also worked out my savings targets for the next couple of months to hit the 3 / 4 month bill money target as back up.
I've been on a one day sewing workshop to increase my skills in that area. oh - and got a new BOB rucky and bits and bobs to go in it - updates to follow.
So - I may have been quiet, but I've not been idle!
What Preps are you doing this week
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Been taking my cleaning regime very seriously. Using my new higher power UVC wand to the max on all the areas where mould came up last summer with the increased humidity. Also attacking (bit by bit) all the dusty areas of the house that no human being normally cleans so that there can be less dustmites (that i seem to have developed an allergy to) and any mould that likes those dark dusty places cant find an easy home.
Using a new bag-less HEPA filter cylinder vacuum cleaner to make sure I get all the dust mites homes out of the carpet to reduce the possibility of more evil. Washed the canvass cover to the wooden wardrobe upstairs in the washing machine using biological powder so that the enzymes can work on killing off any mould on the surfaces of the fibers.
Been steam cleaning the pillows, sofa, carpets and mattress to make sure that can be free from evil too. Steam cleaned the window frames to kill off any mould that has been growing there.
Also used the UVC wand in the bathroom (after it has been dried through toweling down and leaving the windows open) to control nasty evil stuff that may have splashed out of the toilet bowl after I have cleared a blockage recently (using an oversized plunger that was purchased for that purpose).
The steam cleaner is a 1.5L job that is much lower on energy consumption than using a smaller hand held that one has to carry on filling up. And on top of that it was a low cost ebay buy at £41.

Got a steal on gumtree today, grabbed a umarex walther ppk Co2 pistol and 500 bbs for 25 quid! Also getting ready to go and buy my pajero. Will also be ordering a pistol crossbow on Friday, got a shot of one the other day and it's so powerful and accurate. And at only 30 quid its a bargain!
A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week./

Been getting more involved with the local Transition Town movement, it reminds me a lot of the prepper movement but with real local people, allowing you to develop a local network. A few key areas stick out to me permaculture/growing, food storage, energy and re-skilling, very interesting concept put into practice. They even do edible food walks, looking for wild food.

Its worth googling Transition Town with your town name at the end, their are quite a few in the UK. They do a lot of land share stuff too, so for anyone wanting additional growing room there quite happy to help.PreppingPingu wrote:What a fab ideametatron wrote:Been getting more involved with the local Transition Town movement, it reminds me a lot of the prepper movement but with real local people, allowing you to develop a local network. Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Preps have been on a back burner for a bit due to continued unemployment, but the preps I had (saved money and stored food) have really come into their own!
Currently job hunting and applying like a demon (I *hate* application forms). Hopefully something will come of all of this soon.
I've been getting used to the sewing machine I was given at Christmas and have made a purse and a couple of bags which is a nice start. It's really encouraging to follow a pattern and actually end up with something that vaguely resembles the picture
If I can keep up the practice, then I would like to have a go at altering and mending clothes, which if I get good at, could bring in a small income stream. Also my aunt has said I can have the hand cranked sewing machine in her loft. It probably needs some repair, but at least I know how a functioning machine should work now.
My tiny gardening attempt is going a bit pear shaped. *Something* is eating my second and third batch of radishes. We've ruled out slugs and snails because we're not finding trails like we used to. Current theory is that it's pigeons. I got some of those kiddies windmills to stick in the earth to act as scarecrows, but there's still more nibbling. Bah! Beetroot are untouched. First lot seem to be doing well, but the second have been a damp squib. I have another set of seeds germinating in the mini greenhouse so hopefully they'll work.
Have been stockpiling sugar in readiness for blackberry season - blackberry jam and blackberry vodka ahoy! I've finally tracked down a sloe bush, so hopefully sloe gin is on the horizon too!
