Bugger

On a positive note on the skills front, MrsCC asked what I wanted for my birthday next month to which I replied there was a place doing outdoorsy type courses and I fancied doing one. She said as long as I wasn't killing anything that it was fine.... of course not I said, I just neglected to mention the fact that someone else was doing the killing and I was learning the Skinning, Butchery, and Cooking

This is the day course I am booking, lots of others on the site as well. http://www.empirefarm.co.uk/wild-meat-day-947-0.html
Tutor, Marc Frederic demonstrates the skinning of a deer carcass, and teaches you how to skin and joint a rabbit, and pluck game birds. This is a hands-on day as you will be skinning and plucking yourself! There's a lot to fit into this day. As well as preparing the meats, you will be shown how to create attractive roasting joints, make venison sausages, potted meats (rillettes), and try your hand at making a game pie
Sounds good to me, unless MrsCC finds out......I keep telling her that one day she will thank me for all this

 Don't many women do that anyway (Brazilian waxes, eyebrow threading  )

Skills - I ain't got any! I am debating whether to move down south and live with Janso, or go north and move in with Red Doe ....

I can grow fruit and veg.
I can knit, sort-of.
I am a peacemaker, and a good listener. I can see the bigger picture and try to get people to work together for the common good.
I have a strong stomach so could probably handle the 'slopping out' sort of jobs as long as there was soap and water available afterwards

Erm, that's about it, I'm afraid.

You feel like a calm peaceable person, that's three quarters of the battle innit  We would do ok, all of us on this forum. Because we dont get nasty and we dont squabble. That's rare .

This is quite interesting, as I've never actually sat down and thought what I could offer, skills-wise.

I'm an inventive cook, have done a fair amount of camp cooking and prefer to do everything from scratch.
Make jam & preserves, dry fruit, make jerky, wine etc.
Knit very well, sew well enough. Can spin and felt wool, some limited weaving experience.
Can dress out game birds & poultry, am learning to do deer & rabbits (neighbour is a gamekeeper - rather fortuitous that!)
I'm mechanically minded and used to be good with engines (what was that about skills fade?? )
I'm also pretty good with most animals as I worked on a farm for years - can look after most edible critters, milk cows & sheep, plus I can ride and drive horses. One thing on my learn-to-do list is horse-drawn ploughing.
I'm a mean shot with a rifle, absolutely useless with a shotgun.
I've got a lot of experience with kids, although I prefer them at the baby stage, ie before they can answer back. Used to homeschool my lot though.
Plenty of veggie growing experience, collect open pollinated and heritage seeds of varieties.
I can also work with clay and have some very rudimentary knowledge of kiln building.

I'm a very calm person, nothing really gets me rattled. So yeah, I guess I'm not completely hopeless, but there are dozens of things I still need to learn!

From what I've seen on the forum, Lil you are 100% right there.... I don't think NOT having a skill would be a huge problem, because they can always be learnt or re-learnt. As long as people get on, listen to each other, give respect and empathy towards each other and are willing to pitch in with whatever needs doing then a group will always get on and move forwards productively regardless of the hardships involved.

Smiley, haven't got the room yet but once the garden is completely finished, there should be room for a yurt out there!! 8-) 8-)
