I like your reasoning Plymtom.

Yes, some situations are very unlikely but very unlikely things have happened in many countries around the world. Personally, I don't have any problem with discussions such as these. There's plenty of room on these boards to discuss everything from water shortages to extreme SHTF situations.

I agree however unlikely extreme SHTF scenarios make good talking points, most especially if sanity is retained throughout, my point has always been do things because you want to, enjoy the activity, if you need to convince your other half that you need a crossbow in case the zombies attack fair enough if that's the only way you are going to get one ;) I'd prefer a more honest with myself initially, I want one, will it feed me... not if I want to stay legal now and only in the most unlikely and dreadful scenarios would there be a remote possibility I catch so much a Squirell with it, will it make me feel safer in my castle.... no probably not, unless there's a semi auto version with 30 bolt magazine

They're fun, have fun, fair enough they could come in handy if TSHTF but so could a stout stick.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

For personal protection:

Personally, I would think about what I feel the most comfortable with in a worst case scenario and what such scenario might be.
For me, it would be such a thing as a societal collapse causing civil unrest and lawlessness during which I would most likely be hunkering down.
Unlike our cousins across the pond we don't have a 2nd amendment, however those in the UK who have firearms licences would have no need to keep their guns locked up in the cabinet during such a scenario.
For the rest of us, we have to make do with what we can equip ourselves with now in regards to the laws of the country.
If someone was trying to break my door down during a WCS, I think I would feel more comfortable with a 175lb crossbow with a laser dot in my hand than anything else.
You may only get one chance and one shot and you may even be faced with a mob, but there are also other options to consider such as skirmish guns - which can cause severe damage to someone's face and fire multiple shots.
I do not own a crossbow at the moment but it is on my list. If it transpires that Islamic terrorists start attacking people in their own homes then it will be at the top of my list.
I used to go to archery classes a few years back, just for fun really, but I'd certainly get some practice in with a crossbow as in my opinion it's no good just hanging up on the wall until the SHTF.

For Getting Out Of Dodge:

In this case I would be aiming to stay well away from (un)civilization and would be more concerned with things like bushcraft and trapping skills, but would probably take a crossbow with me if it was not a hindrance - and again, would probably depend on the scenario.

May have hit one nail on the head there mate, I took ours to the range a couple of times now it's reminds me of Eric Sykes with that plank
