I have the Lifesystems Solo Traveller FAK http://www.lifesystems.co.uk/products/f ... d-kit.html A very nice kit! I've made a few mods to mine - added a space blanket, lip salve, yellow bio-hazard bag, extra pain killers, tourniquet, plus other stuff, too.

That's good advice. I would only consider a torniquet as a last resort if I couldn't stop the bleeding any other way. I hope I never have to use it.

I know they say you should only have stuff in your FAK that you know how to use, but I sometimes carry stuff that would be useful to a trained first aider in my party or at a scene that I may come across that could use it if they happened to have little or no first aid gear with them. I have a suture kit in my FAK, I wouldn't use it as I'm not trained to do that, but I have it anyway. You never know when something you have with you could save someones life. That's just my take on it for some of the things I carry in my kit.

Good company, bought a lot of stuff of them and never any problems also may give you an idea of the different items you can buy for your kits.

I started with a small basic one from Boots and added bits to it that were personal to my families' needs. The bits I added have come from lots of sorces; poundland, superdrug, bountree medical online. Just remember to rotate dated things as you would with food. I have several kits now - one in my rucksac, one in handbag, and one in the car as well as a larger more in depth one with more medicines in in my house. They are also tailored to where I keep them; for example, the car one has more bandages and large wound dressings, (think car accident,) as well as some travel sickness tablets. The one in my rucksac has a small squeez- to-activate icepack, antihistamines, blister plasters, and some sterile water vials as I will most likely to need those if I was out and about walking. They are just a few examples of how you can tailor a kit to where you are most likely to use it. Some stuff will be the same which ever kit you use!

I would always suggest building your own kit, that way you know exactly what is in it in case you need to use it. Start off with basics, I developed mine over the course of 2 years. I started out just carrying paracetamol because of having a migraine at work (which I did not want to repeat). Then, my friend got hot ash in his eye so I added eye wash. Then plasters for the occasional scratch, followed by tweeters for a splinter I had, then bandages, then ibuprofen, then triangular slings, then foil blankets, hand warmers, ice packs, aspirin, steristrips..... it continued on and on and on; I feel like an ambulance when I'm driving around! But it just starts with one item that cost 60p at Tesco's.

By building a kit this way, you'll know what you need a lot of, and what you could leave out. Try it out and let us know how you get on :)

best bit of advice is get a first aid course under your belt.. then get what you learn to use.. things like strei-strips a great additions too.. then get all the medication you use anyway and stock up on it. when your first aid kit fills a bergan it becomes a hinderance. keep it simple and keep it small.
