This thread reminds me a bit of the 'Children of Men' which is post-SHTF situation film (+book) where the government issues out and markets suicide drugs to anyone who wants them. I guess the thinking is that anyone who is considering suicide isn't going to be adding much to the community and the country is better off without them - not something that i'd necessarily agree with !

erm..... that isn't relevant to me and I am not going to top myself. Sure peoples lives go down the pan and some kill themselves, but some find ways of avoiding that, for instance though finding faith

I DO hope there will be lots of suicides post SHTF, that will cut down the numbers for the rest of us and leave us more stuff to share out. I have read on some forum's people saying they dont want to live after TSHTF if they cant have their TV, X boxes, Computers, meals out and their usual standard of living, well thats their decision, personally i'm going to survive no matter what it takes, altering my way of life would be the least thing.

I'd think people killing themselves would be far better all around than organised religion gaining power in a shtf. Organised religion is the greatest evil of them all. Nothing wrong with believing in god, but I'd be fearful of any religion after a shtf. Convert or die and I'm right and you are wrong comes up with out rule of law or when people believe god is talking to them/guiding them.

IMO Suicide is quite common among people that have had a personal shtf event. So i think a national/international shtf event will lead many to take there lives. My mother has previously expressed that she does not wish to live should shtf happen, i dont know if she will kill herself or just fail to look after herself. It will be one of the hardest things i have to deal with when shtf big time stylie.

Yes it would be sad people did this and I respect their choice. However it would make what food/water and other resources last a bit longer.

It will be important to make sure your immediate area is free from bodies as this could impact on your own survival.
We live in a unsustainable world, there must be a balance, poor people/rich people no more, only prepared people will make it!

No disrespect meant to anyone on anti-depressants, my good lady is one of them and one of my biggest prepping concerns.
I used to be on anti-depressants, during pregnancy i wasnt allowed to take them and my midwife suggested natural alternatives like chocolate and cherry tomatoes. Im sure there may be other naturals too, of course they wont be as effective but may still be a help to your other half post shtf

Thanks for the advice, greebo. I'm looking into alternatives, but getting her to try them is difficult, she's not on board with the preparedness thing yet.

The mind-set that pharmaceutical drugs are all that control illness is an illusion. Juvecu makes a good point about the people on anti-depressants post SHTF. Consider a highly effective herbal anti-depressant - Sceletium tortuosum. Get some seeds and plant it in your garden/greehouse. It is more effective than pharmaceutical anti-depressants but is not addictive or illegal. No pharmaceutical company is going to market it as it is a natural product and therefore cannot be patented. While you are doing this plant some St.John's Wort (Hypericum Perforatum). The active compounds are in the flowers of St John's Wort and all through the plant in Sceletium.

If you want to buy a good straightforward book on effective herbal medicines the best starting point is "Bartrams Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine". It should be in every bug-out box. It will not make you a Medical Herbalist but will give you sensible management of most of the common conditions that you are likely to meet. You can get it second hand on Amazon for peanuts. Its not worth not having. When the SHTF pharmaceutical drugs are likely to vanish quickly and cannot be viewed as a renewable resource.
