Off topic, but still following the heading. What's happening with chicken these days ? Mrs Ogre reports a price jump of a couple of quid on the last week or so for the supermarket variety. Anyone else notice this ?

No more battery caged hens and the price of feed-stuffs and the cost of fuel for the sheds and moving them about is the most likely cause.Ogre wrote:Off topic, but still following the heading. we dont buy supermarket eggs....we just dont know where they come from and cant guarantee they ARE free range even if it says so on the box, so for many years now we have bought from local suppliers who we KNOW have free range chickens, the eggs cost anything from 70p for 6 to a £1.
Re: Hens,eggs and all that
Retail butcher mode now. I suspect that the price will spike for a total of 28 days( LAW) and then a half price /bogof/killer deal in the offing. There have been NO significant price rises lately. We are paying 10p a kilo more at the moment but that dows not put a bird up by 2 quid!Ogre wrote:Off topic, but still following the heading. What's happening with chicken these days ? The supermarkets do this on many items. Shove ip the price for a month and then do a so- called deal. They do NOBODY any favours except themselves.

Medium sized fresh chickens are £5 each or 2 for £8 or something in morrison's. Used to be £4 each. At home I have a single middle aged hen who doesn't lay so we'll be getting a couple of others.
Re: Hens,eggs and all that
same I got 15 rescue hens & sell the extra ones to neighbours , it pays for the feed etc so my eggs are free.. they as good as pigs for eating any left over scraps
Re: Hens,eggs and all that
Along with our Hybrids and mixer home grown chickens we have added Indian Runner ducks as well - 5 or them and we are getting 4 eggs a day sometimes 5 (that is if I get to them before the dog). As with the chickens very easy to look after and really entertaining. Duck eggs are also really good for cooking with and also fantastic poached
Our spare eggs we sell at our respective work places and give to family. Covers the feed and medicines providing us with free eggs and entertainment.
Every year we also feed up a batch of chickens for the pot - These are kept away from the "layer" chickens, fenced in and are not named by the children. They get a good longer life than the supermarket chickens and we tend to feed then corn two weeks before dispatch giving a great colour and flavour.

Swore I wouldn't get chickens again after a pine martin wiped mine out. Didn't have any for ages then earlier this year got 8 warrens, i really miss them, not just their eggs, when I don't have any, pathetic
