I'd like to get hold of one of the old ones like my Dad had took actual razor blades from a dispenser then screw top on and away ya go, double sided too. Do they still make razor blades like the old ones?
Yes, still plenty of double edged razors (or Safety Razors) around, I have a cheapy Boots one I occasionally use, if I get good enough with it it may even replace my Wilkinson Sword. Needs a different technique which I haven't quite mastered yet, as a result I don't get a close enough shave yet manage to cut myself more. if you fancy spending a lil more for a shiny metal one this site http://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/shav ... razors.php has them ranging from £20 to £200 :shock: same site has the blades starting at £3.50 per 10, also available from Boots, Asda etc.

If your willing to spend a bit more upfront and spend a bit more time maintaining it you could get a straight razor apparently takes a *lot* of getting used to, but with proper care you may never need to buy another blade. I am rather tempted to try, but it's a bit of an investment if I don't get used to it.

(note no connection to the above site other than I happened to have it open in another tab when I read Chef's comment. A search for razors or shaving will bring up a load of others, some of which do bulk deals on the blades)

I recall reading a book about the gold rush days in canada, they used to have beards (shaving wasn't a priority in frontier living) they ate meat, and the fat from the meat used to accumulate on the beard, this was then snipped off when needed, and used for fire starting with a flint and steel. In fact mountain men used to grow beards so that they could rub the remaining animal fat into their beards for this purpose. So I suppose my contribution to this thread is: be clean shaven and look nice, or,, grow a beard, and have a fire starting kit growing around your face. (I haven't got a beard, but shaving wouldn't be my first priority in a survival situation)
Upside=you can keep your family warm.
Downside=you will never be kissed.

Cheers for that link maddriver quite like some of the Merkurs, initially went for the long handled one but out of stock, this open comb one's not too bad though.

Think a straight razor would be quite deadly (to myself), not something I'll even contemplate trying :lol:

I'll also pass on the grease laden beard thanks Scablifter lol I really can't be doing with a furry face or head, if I run out of foam/gel/soap/washing up liquid/olive oil/etc I'll dry shave it :lol:

Lmao, do you often eat fatty meat and let it drip through your beard or rub your grease laden hands through your beard to clean them so you can start a bit of a fire at a later date? I'm sure your specimen is completely food debris and dripping free bulldogeagle. :D

Did these goldrush type peeps never hear of fatwood, birchbark, resin, moss, king alfreds cake fungi, or indeed feather sticks? :?

Fortunately you can actually make charcloth (cloth that has been charred) and use that as something to take the spark from a flint and steel and no need to wipe your face with lard.

Yep missed that from my little list, and thankfully you've now reminded me that I need to make some more and have 2 old pairs of jeans in the charcloth bag ready for conversion from useless very holey denim into very useful charcloth. Now where's me tin... :D

I requested an old type razor for Christmas last year.
I only shave every other day and when I do, I use the old style razor with a normal razor blade in it and then just finish off with and daylight robbery Gillete Fusion just to get the ultra smooth finish.

As I get better with the old style one I should be able to dismiss the "HOW MUCH!!!!!" Gillette completely.

Razor blades are very reasonabley priced as well.

Be lucky (and smooth as a baby's)
