without knowing the initial set of conditions I cant be more exact however I think we can survive short term pretty much most things except the realy big game changers or global catastrophe like all out war or an extinction event.
that may sound realy bold but actually in the very long term our chances arnt great.
Having said that they are improving all the time ...and i have recently got some realy good ideas and information. :D

I very much doubt that anything really big is going to affect all of us, biggest thing most likely to happen is going to be on the family levels.

Other stuff may cause an inconvenience for a lot of people for a short amount of time or a few people for a long amount of time, but the UK is not going to have any major natural disasters like the tsunami of a few years back in Indonesia, or the Earthquakes of New Zealand or Japan, a nuclear disaster like Chernobyl is not likely to happen, the greatest threat to a huge amount of the population is still the effects of a Pandemic, and after the news items today the biggest concern is the way it is dealt with more than the problem itself.

Doesn't mean I won't be prepping for some unforeseen event, but will be trying to keep it firmly in the reality and probable rather than in any other place.

initially i would give my chances at about 50% because of knowledge, planning and stores. Later because of my inability to do hard manual work, about 2% unless i could devise a way of making myself needed within a community. I could perhaps become ferrel but my chances then would probably be less than 1%. Ultimately because of age and health my chances would be slim but i would give it my best shot.

Depending on the community make up there will possibly be things to do that don't fall into "manual"

Even if it is sitting on a roof keeping a look out, all survivors will have a place somewhere in a community. Well almost everyone

SHTF = running out of money.

I have been waiting patiently for a US dollar cheque to clear for a while now (just £190 worth). I am still waiting. I have enough beans and lentils and rice to keep me going a long long time, however, I have eaten into my last can of meat. BUT, I have also learned that I can grind up buckwheat in my coffee grinder and make pancake flour with it. I can also grind up lentils in my coffee grinder and make soups from it, when, with curry powders and spices added, taste better then anything you might buy at an Indian restaurant.

SHTF can strike at any time. My next bunch of preps includes alcohol to provide heat and cooking power. But that will take investment, so that will take time but when its done, it will be done and I will be ok if the power goes south because I can't afford to keep the meters fed.

Has anyone scene the film 'into the wild' about Chris Mccandless, he in the end of movie ends up in Alaska, he has a good set up and plenty ammumition. He kills a moose or some large animal but can't gather what he needs and start a fire in time to cook it before flies get to the meat. (I wont spoil the film but its great watch it).

I agree I think everyone will have their place. Even it if is playing cook, forager, fire wood gatherer, hunter, gaurding, mid wife/nurse etc

Talking of surviving, who was that convict that escaped prison into the countryside, and he ate his fellow escapees one by one. No one belived him when he told them until he escaped again and they found him with a hand in his pocket LOL

Matt
Grind lentils, split peas etc (but not uncooked beans) in coffee grinder
mix in dried onions and garlic + some curry powders + herbs and spices. (or anything to taste)
Cook in a saucepan with water.
Stir continually to make sure that it don't stick
add water regularly bit by bit to maintain texture.
The soup will expand.
Serve after 30 minutes cooking on medium to low heat.
Eat.
Go "yum"
Smile
Digest.

That's sounds great Nick, will give it a try.

I think once I get my water preps sorted, I will be good to bug in with the family for a month. That will be my first milestone and I will work from there. I am of the opinion that either things will have returned to a level of normalcy, even if that means standpipes and rationed food within a month, or something really really bad has happened and longer rm survival will be essentially dependant upon community and forming small groups to survive and protect.
