Some great ideas there guys, thanks very much.

Ive been on the allotment waiting list for about a year now, will start pestering them after the new year, that landshare site looks good, will give that a good viewing over the weekend, might pop to the council next week and ask how to go on about actually buying a small plot of land, like if farmers and that sell off small bits to the public, but as for my back yard.....well, yeah, ive been thinking about it for some time, its all concrete, about 20ft by 15ft ish, as it happens, i had this delivered today (friday) from ebay... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CHICKEN-COOP- ... 3a6729c87a ,i got it for only £46 so was well pleased, i will look into transforming my back yard in the spring for this coop with 2 chickens if i fail in my attempt to get a move to a place with a garden, an allotment, buy a patch of land or fail in the landshare site, the coop in my back garden is a last resort, but i will do it if all else fails, for the price of the coop and 2 chucks its worth a try, only thing is, i have people living above me, and they look down into my yard, but i would ask them first, but again, for £46 its worth a shot.

Keep up raymanand thats how I got started in preppeing by investing in basics of food and water. One thing I would recomend on the food front, is to buy varity of foods and expirment I regular buy and try different types of can and dry goods to find out what works and I enjoy. Then I stock up more in that product if I like it.

A water butt, for emergency water..use various methods to filter, clean etc.
small chicken/rabbit coop?
sprout seeds indoors..alfalfa..very good for vitamins i believe.
maybe small pots on window sills.
Great advice.

You can grow pretty much anything in a box.... and its a great way to practice. Do these with seeds indoors too. Can you make them get to a plantable size? If so your halfway there.

Depending on the amount of light falling in your yard you can do a lot better than growing in pots. It is easy to construct raised beds using pretreated planks of wood. We grow a lot of vegetables like that here because the ground is too boggy for most veg to survive but it does well in raised beds. There would no need to disrupt the concrete in the yard.

The other thing that springs to mind is water, buying bottled water is no more than a very short term solution take a look at a berkefeld filter. If you don't want to invest the full amount in a filter the cheap alternative i to buy a filter "candle" in an emergency these could easily be set up in a bucket with a hole drilled in it to mount the candle (element) .

below a reputable supplier of this water filter.

basic preps

Post by 22Dreams »

Hi i am starting today jan 1st 2012, as a prepper my son has got me interested in it, the first thing i have done is go through all my tools, i have put aside all the ones that will need sharpening, and have placed some into there respective tool box's. Also i have gone through all the nails, screws, nuts and bolts and put them into plastic containers with labels. In a shtf scenario we will be building alot of home made things, Rabbit hutch,s veg cloch's is that's how you spell it, solar panels out of coke cans in a box all those things and if we haven't got supplies of basic nails and screws we will have to venture out into the big wide world to find these things, and the less we are out and about the better in my eyes.

Im starting to feel a bit calmer now that Ive found Im doing something right because I always have enjoyed gardening and I have quite a large garden, mainly vegetables and herbs with a small green house.

The lists were a bit scary but gardening Im comfortable with.
