The thing that has helped me is the realisation by the miserly one
that stored food is being rotated into the store cupboard. The fact that I purchase it is also a bonus for her.

Re: Family preps
I have only recently got my head round to thinking about "prepping" rather than "having a few extra just in case." We have an allotment now so that led onto one of my " I wish were were more self sufficient" conversations with my OH and about wishing to be more prepared and not knowing what life will throw at you - one of those conversations! While my OH freely admits if we had the money we'd live somewhere more remote and have a cellar/store and be kitted up to the nines but as he pointed out, it does come down to money and space.
I think that angle can used to back up prepping -"storing a bit extra" - what happens if you lost your job, needing water in case of a burst pipe or summer drought, what happens if ... etc. In these times of poor ecconomy, I am bulk buying to save money so he is happy about that! I am also gently buying in a few things extra at present and always maintain my cupbaords in the kitchen to bursting point. I don't think he realises how much I can squirrel away in my kitchen cupboards
and how many extra 2l water bottles that are up in the water tank cupboard. I am starting small and just keeping it low key but sowing the seeds of " We really should be a bit more prepared". Hopefully time will mean he comes on board a bit more. He just chuckles at my rucksac that is always stocked ready to go. We needed some AA batteries the other night so I got them out of my ruck sac saying that I ought to use them in case they were out of date. He asked why on earth I had batteries in there. "In case my torch runs out - no point in having a torch in there if it doesn't work!" was my reply

Re: Family preps
My girlfriend just said "but you'd look after me if anything happened" so I guess I'm prepping for two.
She has been slightly more receptive lately though!

It's a tough one, this. Where do you stop stashing food and gear " just in case" and start getting obsessive? And it's that obsession that makes the OH go off on one!
Now we have the threat of a fuel shortage, and therefore possible food shortage in the shops, this is a good time to say'perhaps we should put xyz to one side in case the shops are not re supplied'.
The last fuel strike back in 2000 was when I started prepping. My Wife is now with me(mostly!)
and it has put us in a good place now as the cupboards are always full and if there is a strike ,no worries. Also the whole prep thing alters your mindset. For instance you think "what if?" about many situations. Something I think we have got out of the habit of doing as modern humans. Many preppers drive themselves to be debt free ,to learn new skills-really to be a useful member of their community. A win -win situation all round I reckon!

In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

I agree. Take cooking. Got rid of the electric cooker for gas. Then got in some LPG jets in case the mains gas goes off. Then got a sodding huge LPG BBQ (with the big 47K bottles)in case we have probs with the main cooker. Then picked up a coleman stove at a car boot in case something goes awry with the BBQ. Then got in one of those diddy briefcase type cannister things in case we need a ring. Putting together a rocket stove for the shed. Also have a a dutch oven with the BIG pot. And now I fancy one of these.

It's either waaayyyy to easy to become obsessed or my subconscious is trying to tell me something about my need for hot cooked food. Help

Re: Family preps
May I humbly suggest a sneaky addition:
Plan A is every day use, redundant supply, cleaned, maintained and reliable.
Plan B is a complete secondary system, decent camping stove, LPG barbeque, etc
Plan C is a complete cheap tertiary system, LIDL Trangia, Butane camping stove. Cheap and cheerful, packed away and forgotten about but something to give your neighbors when they smell you cooking or are freezing and come knocking at your door, they will, they will. Otherwise you might be tempted to give away (not loan, it won't come back usable) your secondary system which might land you with a problem later. You need that up your sleeve, it is your backup, not theirs.

Oh the advantages of not having an OH LOL
Just me and my lad and he's always thought I was mad anyway, always had a 'store cupboard' and been interested in growing own veg etc., so nothing really seems out of the ordinary, plus we both watch diaster/apocalypse/survival type TV shows/movies so he's prtty clued up on what could happen. He'd love to move to the middle of nowhere and do up a place from scratch same as me.

Re: Family preps
In a roundabout kinda way of prepping I've got both my boys enrolled in the cubs/scouts. Teaches them about looking after themselves, camping, packing and organising the essentials for a camp life and to my suprise shooting with air rifles. This is starting to instill the right mentality for a preppers life so I don't come accross as a big nag and the house wierdo. Just got to get the OH onboard now.
