I sympathise with the freezer food loss, it`s one of my main worries and another reason I`m looking at alternative ways of food storage beyond canning, which requires expensive equipment I can`t afford.

I know what you mean, it is expensive and also the botulism threat makes me wonder if it is all worth it, so i make do with a lakeland dehydrater £50 and a JML food sealer also £50 and i manage quite well on that, the bags and they also do a smaller £10 vacuum pump that sucks the air out of the special bags that improves the shelf life a good deal, those garage shelves, not very nice but can be disquised, 5 tiers from Argos at £50 some material over them and you can stack enough, freeze flour first to make sure there are no weavels and its good for 18 months as against 6 and rice too.

one from your store ?

4 medium grated carrots from dried
small amount of ginger
5 tablespoons wholewheat flour, big heaped up ones.
2 tablespoons very dark sugar
2 tablespoons eucalyptus honey
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 small tin oranges


mix as you would a cake and bake in a tin on gas mark 4 until golden brown
