I have a Timex Expedition.It is still ticking after 5 years and no change of battery.I have had good watches but I am hard on them.
Regarding being able to do without a timepiece, I would find that tough and disorienting. I once spent 23 hours under arrest ( wrongfully) and I found that not knowing what the hour was ,let alone the exact time, to be most disconcerting.

I had one of them, it worked for ages and then died on me, the case metal had started to break down and the inside was shot, but for its price I couldn't complain, ref being arrested, I also have experienced this and I was trained to deal with this using astral meditation whilst sat in the lotus position, next thing I know plods taping me.... I think they left me to cook for 30mins but it seemed like 2 mins..... then it was name rank and number... yeh I was innocent as well,
