I do find that people who smoke will always find an excuse for their addiction, I was the same for thirty years.

From a preppers point of view I look at it differently these days,

I now have an extra £2000 a year in the bank, a better car, a nice piece of land for growing my own foodstuffs :D

I now know that people who smoke post event will near enough sell their soul for a fix, so first thing to do post fall is secure as many smokes as possible :D

If I have to bug out I will probably be a bit healthier than I was four years ago so will be able to "leg it" better if necessary

if TSHTF I won't be needing to think about getting me smokes in as well as food and other niceties.

Of course preppers can still be called preppers if they carry on smoking, but the extras you can do with the money saved will mean you can prep better and last longer when TSHTF. And hopefully the healthier life style will mean they can avoid having the need for prescription drugs for smoking related illnesses when it matters most, when there aren't any left

Thats true but we all spend money on buying or doing things that we enjoy when that money could have been spent on preps. Cars, drinking, eating out, cinema, theatre, holidays (to NZ ;) ), sky tv, etc etc etc. All the money you spend on things that are not a requirement to survive could be spent on prepping, but you gotta enjoy life as well ........and I enjoy my roll-ups

Hi my name is Flying Haggis and I am a smoker  I know its not the best thing to do for when the SHTF but I try and put a packet of rolling tobacco and some parers away every few weeks just in case (I say try, even though I smoke normal ciggys it is inevitable that I run out of smokes and have to dip in and open a pack of backy which hast to then be replaced )

I know if the SHTF and I run out of backy I will be pulling my hair out like a crazy mad man but I must admit I like my ciggys, I dot drink , never have been much of a drinker so its really my only vice bar chocolate :P

i smoked for 30+ years, gave up because of the cost and now havent smoked for 16 years, i gave up because I wanted to, i didnt need patches or anything else, just a bit of WILLPOWER nothing more, like has been said, you can give up if YOU really want to.

Thats the point..."if you really want to". I dont want to, I enjoy it :D

There was a similar thread on LSG a week or so ago where a chap said (i'm paraphrasing here) that it was pretty stupid to be a prepper and still smoke. You could apply that reasoning to hundreds of things

You could say it's stupid to be a prepper and be overweight, underweight, not eat enough fruit and veg, drink alcohol, join the military or police, go sailing, rock climbing, drive without a seatbelt, cross the road etc, anything that is not good for your health.

The anti-smoking brigade get on my tits frankly. They are perfectly entitled to their views but stop ramming it down the throats of others.....especially when no doubt some of them are lard buckets who get out of breath climbing the stairs to go to bed while munching on a giant pizza and swigging a litre of Cola

And reformed smokers are by far the worst, I know....I'm married to one. I keep telling her if i wanted to give up I would...I dont so I wont :D

I think Carrot Cruncher’s spot on, a lot of people like to get on their high horse about smoking but you could easily say the same about any number of thinks. I mean what isn’t packed full of carcinogens and other assorted nastiests these days anyway. :tinfoil

I'll leave you with this :D

i never said i was anti smoking, i just said i gave up, if i can give up so can anyone, but at the end of the day it is their decision, if they dont want to give up-they wont! i have to say though that i felt a hell of a lot better when i did, my breathing was a lot improved, i lived alone half way up a long hill and i found i could walk up it a lot faster after i gave up. another side effect was my taste buds improved and i could actually taste my food again, and my clothes no longer stank of tobacco smoke. to say nothing of all the money i saved, i not only smoked cigarettes-mainly rollies-but i also smoked a pipe.
