Amelanchiers are good if you're looking for a small tree. They have pretty coppery foliage in the spring, followed by glorious white blossom, which develops into edible berries (if you can get to them before the birds!) and lovely fiery autumn foliage.

Amelanchier alnifolia is the one

Hawthorn - 'Big Golden Star' is the variety you want.

The thing is though - what do you want to do with the plants - make jam? Pick and eat? Security with benefits?
