Hello from Galicia Northern Spain
Hello from Galicia Northern Spain
Hi I am pleased to have found this forum. My husband and myself moved from Kent to northern Spain nearly 3 years ago so we could have more land and grow our own food. UK land prices were too high to try it there. I am looking forward to chatting to like minded people on here and sourcing equipment that will allow us to be more independent.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Tell us a little more about your set up. Are you looking to be as self sufficient as possible?
Why choose Spain?
We're a nosy bunch....

Hi - I'm a newbie here too. I lived down in Andalucia for 10 years but returned to the UK last year. Visited Galicia and thought it was beautiful...reminded me of Cornwall...found all the eucalyptus trees overbearing though!

Holla, and welcome to the forum. It sounds as if you have caught the property prices right. How much land had you aquired, and to what extent do you wish to use it. Are you looking at being self sufficient or are you also preppers.

Sounds fantastic! And I'm nosy too
most of us on here are in fairly typical UK properties, tho there's a large minority that have quite a bit more land than that. I'm in the "fairly typical" bunch

Hi Thanks for the responses, You have asked lol.... We have just over 5 acres of pasture land, a farmhouse, 4 barns and a huge woodshed. Our place has a well, borehole and spring so water should be taken care of. We were lucky we got a fab place with amazing views over a valley with mountains in the distance and it cost us around £70,00, less than our two bed terrace cost us in Kent. Northern Spain is very different to the south, very agricultural, green and hilly, how I imagine Ireland is, we get very wet winters but good hot summers. Yes we want to do the Self Sufficiency thing and I am currently trying to develop a Forest garden, veggie patch, willow coppice and orchards.
The only downside has been that my husband has had to go back to the UK to work to pay the mortgage so I am on my own for most of the year. It will be worth it though eventually and we have hopes that he can do remote working in the future (he works in IT poor devil). Yes we are prepping for the long term. Luckily we both agree that the current system is doomed, so we have decided together to make a major lifestyle change. We come at it from the Environmental destruction/climate change/peak oil point of view. Having land to feed ourselves and our families, and living in a supportive community seem the sensible way forward to us. When we get the cash together our priorities are wood burning range, manual water pump for the borehole and solar hot water (and a new roof). Galicia is full of peasants (in a nice way, we are too) who still have all of the old agricultural skills so the place is geared towards our lifestyle. Locals make their own wine and spirits, keep pigs and slaughter at home, milk house cows and grow their own veggies. What else would anyone need?
