Cheap LED torches and lanterns from 99p stores or poundland, loads of cheap batteries possibly even for £1 per 12 heavy duty types (normally used for clocks. Alkaline is better but if there is a power cut you use what you can) and packs of 100 tea light candles from asda for £2.

Start researching how to make olive oil lamps on youtube and google, and get a good length of galvanised wire and some lamp wick (the round type) from your local hardware store.

Thats your emergency lighting sorted out.

Also make sure you have hot water bottles (again from cheap shops, they may smell a bit of Chinese factory chemicals for the first 2 years, but that will go with usage) and a camping kettle. Also think about longjohns and long sleeved thermal vests.

One more thing that I have noticed is that one of my local pharmacies sell chemical hand warmers that boast a 10 hour period of heat once activated. They sell them for £1 a pop. When I get my next bunch of cleared pay, I was thinking of buying up a few handfuls of them. They seem like they pack very flat too, so they can be stored in a drawer in case of midwinter powercuts or something to take with you when going for a trip into the city centre to see the Christmas lights lighting ceremony.
