Greeting from Essex

Post by Charlie 5 »

Hi

Been living partially off the grid for 18 months in a very small boat (not on the water - it is weather tight but not water tight lol). Wood burning stove for heat and cooking plus a little camping gaz for back up. Water from a stand pipe. Solar panel for charging battery bank. Chemical Loo. Have a full time job - but he who chops wood gets warm twice. Drive an old Land Rover. This life is hard mentally and physically - when the fire goes out it gets very cold, very quickly - I will be upgrading from my Boat to an insulated shipping container soon. The ultimate stealth living. Until then an arctic sleeping bad works well. No point in prepping if in WROL others steal your all your supplies and kill you.. Bug in rather than Bug out - unless it is a credible NBC threat. This life is all about conserving energy. Charge 12v items like smartphones and dongles when driving (I am not a luddite lol). Very lucky to be able to shower and do laundry at work (I did say partially off the grid). If your life depends on a good supply of wood - its always an Axe. Batoning looks good in You Tube Videos, but last February when it was -7.6 Degrees C and with a Wood Burner that eats wood like the Cookie Monster eats cookies, an Axe wins everytime. If I cant boil or fry it - I'm not interested. Train every day, the fitter you are, the easier it is survive this lifestyle. Well thats me.
If I fail, at least I fail whilst daring greatly, so that my place will never be with those cold and timid souls who have known neither victory or defeat

Hello and welcome.

Sounds like an interesting set up. Please explain how you have your boat sited eg plot of land, dry dock etc.
if you have land do you 'grow your own'?

If you don't mind tell us a little more about how you are going to site your shipping container too.

Yes we are a nosy bunch :D

Boat is in a Boatyard. Has lots of shipping containers that are used as storage. Mine will look like all the others. I would point out that it is only for me - this is not a life for the faint hearted. No thoughts of growing my own food. Would rather store it in small amounts at different locations. In any radiological, chemical or biological threat - your alottment maybe history. Notwithstanding that in WROL the government or their henchmen will come along and take your crops/supplies - if not them then any roaming feral gangs. I think you need to look at 6 to 12 months for storage. MH 25 years ? Way too far to think about. I, like others buy cheap supermarket own brand tins and dried food - they normally give you a couple of years and potentially alot longer. Why do I live like this? I resent subsidising a morally bereft government, utility and financial infrastructure. Mind you - you have to compromise in some respects - I have a formal address elsewhere - I need to bank like everyone else (as much as I dislike it). As I said at the start "partially" off the grid :)
