Bug out / foraging multi-pocket waistcoat - just £20 on ebay

Post by JohnRio »

Having read the accounts by that Serbian fella (who survived the turmoil over there) about how it was best to carry a small rucksack when foraging post-SHTF - because a big ruscksack makes you a target for those who wonder what you've got in there...
And knowing that small rucks- when overloaded - tend to hurt my lower back... I was thinking about how I could spread the weight / carry a bit more unobtrusively.
I know US preppers love their military webbing but that's way too obvious in my opinion.
As far as possible I want my preps to appear utterly normal and non-threatening to the public. :tinfoil:

Brain-wave! The fishing waistcoat! Those have loads of pockets! :geek:
A lot of them seemed rather expensive, but then I found these for just 20 quid - I got mine (XL olive green) a couple of days ago. It seems fairly well made, of polycotton* and it has FOURTEEN pockets!
Sold by Dallaswear. Delivery only took a couple of days.

I was practicing with my catapults in the yard this afternoon and the velcro outer/lower/RHside is in the perfect place for the lead balls! :ugeek:

I plan to rejig my BOB and move some stuff into the waiscoat, and add a few bits and bobs to the pockets in there too...

*seems to be the same hard-wearing material my old German Army shirts are made of. I bought 12 for a pound each from an Army Surplus place nearly 20 years ago. I removed the flags and then wore them pretty constantly ever since - half of them are still going strong! Of those that fell by the wayside, I grew out of some (weight training) and a few were sacrificed to working on engines, decorating and derusting a boat hull.

These are good bits of kit and very tough. I actually use one for fishing!
Great for spreading the weight-and forcing you into NOT carrying too much. Personally I am a minimalist where kit is concerned. Some BOB lists you read would require you to be an olympic powerlifter! As you say,its not military and frankly they do not draw attention as men (of a certain age 'ahem!')wear them as standard.

In fact your thread has inspired me to run through the pockets of my "emergency vest"as I call it,and see what I can kick out.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

I used to have a 10 mile hike home with a rucksack in case of EMP so I went down this path.

Bought one at the local market. £16 being a big sod. It has (hang on) 9 external and 2 internal pockets. It was a good idea, but by the time I had multitool, F.A.K waterbottle, etc etc It looked weirdly chunky.

Also discovered that material generates a very small static charge. Not enough for a proper zap but enough to make your arm hairs stick out like something from the Adamms Family

So I just loaded mine up, and disappointingly, the way it's cut, it closes on your neck half-strangling you and rides up to dig into the back of your neck. Being as the idea was to make carrying stuff less uncomfortable, I'm going to have to modify it... I figure if I "scoop" out the neck so it hangs wider apart that'll work. It'll entail a bit of sewing, like... arse.

Fair warning, if you spot one with a scooped out neck, probably better to go for that one.

The 5.11 version is much better and handles heavier loads than the cheapie versions in my experience!

There are several on ebay at the moment!
