It was a shock when i noticed the void bellow the cupboard i assumed it would be like the rest of the house and only have about 2ft height i was blown away when i noticed there was a space behind the cupboard same size just taller.

the only drawback i can see at the moment is humidity i can most likely overcome this with good air tight boxes and water proof bags
access is easy enough pop up the floor boards like in pic drop down bellow the cupboard and move towards the back wall through the hole and then your clear to stand up

Hi , every one should check there flood risk maps at http://maps.environment-agency.gov.uk/w ... =407718.75

Before contemplating any underground structure .

The area where i live would be under 3mtrs of water should the electricity fail for any lenght of time as we are reliant upon the Keadby pump station to clear all the rain water from a vast area see http://www.waterprojectsonline.com/case ... e_2011.pdf .

And heading for the hills , some times isnt the best option see http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2 ... l-disaster .

As you may decide on the hiden cache priciple , then find it submerged in certain situations .
So plan wisely and live longer .

What's Chernobyl got to do with a basement storage room?

Iff any members dont know about the quarantine zones in Wales , Lake district and Scotland and headed off to make Caches ( As i said ) they may be wasteing there time iff placed incorrectly , After all from watching many programes on the subject the main thing people do in a flood situation is head for the hills .Some are TOXIC .

Hi ,In reply to itsybitsy - The point is that every one should do a land search before digging , I dont have a link - But only 10 miles from my home in Retford a builder bought a beautiful field to create a new housing estate , He didnt do a land search , He bought an old 1902 lake that had been filled with hundreds of dead cows that were slaughtered during the Anthrax out break ,He only had to spend £2M removing the contaminated soil and replacing with fresh top soil .So the moral seems to be that you never know what is under your feet , And to rush in blind may be worse than having no storage at all .And should any members be planning on heading for the quarantine zones as shown on the maps http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2 ... l-disaster , Then All the plant life and food supply animals in these areas are TOXIC , So is it not best to inform as many as possible about these areas that to some one living 50 miles away may know nothing about ?And as the underground storage also covers caches that many hide along and at there destination , would being forewarned of the problems that are STILL PRESENT not be of relivence ? Of course there is also the Chemical / Industrial / Agrigultural contaminations present in old and derilict areas , That many builders buy cheap for new developments .
SO check before you dig .

VSAINT, the article you link to is dated 2009, several years out of date.

More recently there has been a consultation about lifting restrictions.

http://www.food.gov.uk/news-updates/con ... IPwo5G9KK0

Here are the responses

http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/ ... ponses.pdf
The responses are generally supportive of the risk assessment and its conclusions that there is a very low risk to consumers and that controls are no longer required to protect consumer safety. While we note that some individuals and their representatives have reservations regarding the potential damage to consumer confidence, the FSA is being evidence-led when making decisions on food safety controls. Following consideration of the consultation responses received, our assessment – subject to agreement by the FSA Board at its meeting on 20 March – remains that removal of controls will not compromise consumer safety.
As far as any more posts on this topic, when you've hijacked threads and have nothing sensible to say, they will be removed.

I was aware of this doccument and it still states that the risk is low ? Would you like to go forage and live there ? I know i wouldnt .
