Thanks to Don, I've now been looking at narrow boats all day instead of what I should have been doing! ;)

Welcome Don. I'm in the city up the river so not too far from you. Lovely spot at Sharpness - my great gran lived there (and she was an evil old biddy... ). Sounds like you have it all sorted - we'll be picking your brains soon I'm sure.

Hello Don,
Fascinating post. I was very tempted by narrow boats myself a few years back. I used to live in Derbyshire and wander along the peak forest canal with the dog. The boat people were amazingly friendly and a couple of them actually let me onto their boats and discuss pros/cons with them. One bad winter I was trudging through loads of snow and felt sorry for one quite elderly guy moored up. I asked him if he was ok and warm enough etc and he just laughed. Pointed to the chimney and said 'wood burner - bet I'm warmer than you are!'
Also used to love watching the 'roses and castles' paintwork and bought a few items of that.

The general advice I got was that it wasn't to be thought a cheap option (boat repairs/mooring fees etc) and that as a woman on my own I'd struggle with some of the locks although if I hung about there would likely be someone along to help.
Am very green of your lifestyle! well done you.

Welcome Don!
I also thought about narrow boats some time ago but at the end decided in favour of land and more space for my preps :D

Hello Don

Welcome to the mad house.

Don dia dhuit é, edged do bhád le bloic gorm glas le buí. agus do dubh butty suas go dtí an an gunnel le sonrú dearg agus buí? Ní bheidh mé a rá ainm an bád ar chúiseanna slándála. An raibh tú ar an long ard i dtrí Gloucester Aoine ó shin ag imirt dairteanna le Karl an scipéir ar an sean-Edward Elgar?

And for those who didn't understand the bulk of that.

Hello to it, your boat edged with blue green to yellow blocks. butty black and up to the gunnel to appear red and yellow? I will not say the name of the boat for security reasons. Were you on the tall ship in three Gloucester ago Friday Karl playing darts with the skipper of the old Edward Elgar?

Thank you so much for your responses. If anyone does have any questions about Narrow Boats, Living-aboard (or boats in general), Please let me know and I will answer if I can.

I do not have internet access at the moorings so tend to connect to the pub wifi when I moor up for an evenings drinking so it may take a couple of days for me to get back.

Stephen Lee,

As I live and breath. You are the last person that I expected to run into on a prepping website. Of course it was me in the tall ships. I will text you tonight. Your erse is impeccable as ever.
