When you see the government advice to have. "First aid kit" then you see the kits in Boots / savers / generic pharmacy/ home bargains.. you'd be better off with a blue roll and some electricians tape  talk about a false sense of security the case is the best bit :tinfoil

Incidentally Lidl have the German car FAKits coming up for a £5 it's a good starter kit for those with a little knowledge nothing swanky but a good supply of dressings and bandages in a half decent zip up case
Even so called "Military FA kits" are lacking in burns kits

Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

Picked up another 6 x 2L bottles of water.

Reading through this thread, someone suggested wet wipes for light washing to preserve water for drinking and cooking, so I've ordered a few packs of wet wipes. Good advice, thankyou!

As someone else mentioned when I told colleagues what had happened they could not believe that I carry burns dressings in my home first aid kit.
Good news, mostly, thanks for the update Medusa. I must say, if I had to lay my hands on burns dressings quickly, I don't think I could do it. But its so likely to be needed quickly, if it's needed at all. Might do as well to set up an extra little kit near the kitchen fire blanket.

As for what I'm doing, the work is on the garden. My brother was down here 10 days ago, brought his chain saw along, though it was blunted by work he'd done in London for his son and a new delivery didn't arrive in time. Still, he cut a path right to the back of the garden, a great start. Since then, I've been doing short pieces of work (while recovering from a pretty severe chronic fatigue attack) working on the narrow bit outside my back door: abandoning the garden for the foxes for the last two years was **not** a good idea, and the catchup work is going to be horrendous. But given what we're facing, appropriate - I'm going to replant sage, chives, rosemary and lavender, put in a garlic bed, make space for courgettes and chard next year (I've grown seedlings two years in a row, and not planted them out). I really believe our supply chains are going to get more and more dodgy, including being very expensive, so this sort of work will pay itself back in the next year alone, I'd imagine.

Medusa wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2026 7:22 pm Was grateful for my first aid kit tonight. Cooked a nice bit of (yellow sticker) beef for tea and as I pulled the roasting tray out of the oven it slipped and the liquid poured over my foot. Had my Magnum boots on and not barefoot thank goodness but the liquid seeped through the tongue and my sock, threw the boots off stuck my foot in some cold water and then put a burns dressing on. Hopefully, it wont be too bad tomorrow, still a little painful but may not be able to get any footwear on. Will stock up on more burns dressings now too.
Sorry to hear that, Medusa, hope tomorrow is okay.

It's a really good point though - burns aren't solely scalded fingers from hot pans, some spilled fat spreads damage over a wide area, and dressings need to be appropriately sized, and in appropriate numbers. And they need to be at home, right where you need them - imagine queuing at an A&E, maybe in winter time. My brother waited 2 x 10 hours one weekend recently (he refused to stay in, went home and came back first thing in the morning), and the nurse told him it was a quiet day.
I scalded my hand, rather badly, a few years ago. I went to A&E and the consultant treated it with some cream - I don't recall what it was but it took the pain out of it literally in seconds. He said it was 'magic' and cost about £70.00 a tube for the NHS to buy! I would definitely invest in some if I could recall what it was called. Can any medical peeps on here enlighten us?

Bathroom light pull cord broke - from inside the rose. Tried to put my new front bike tyre on. I got the wheel off, and tyre pulled away from the rim on one side, but I could not do that second side! Best I could do was maybe 3mm for a few inches, then it would snap back! After half an hour of sweating, I gave up.

So I have the bike mechanic and the electrician here tomorrow. Getting the front living room light rose/cord/bayonet fitting replaced at the same time.

I wonder if my new tyres are easier to get off. Or if a different kind is easier? My new ones are wire bead. I will ask him tomorrow.

I just watched a professional video, and he just casually pushed the tyre off the rim in about a second, with zero effort. I was pulling from the other side, but it's the same thing.
