Actually it may work better than farting about with pins for hemming, just sew straight through it then rip it off?sniper 55 wrote:Duct tape works well.... and yes before you ask I have done it. I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

now thats actually a good idea, if you got the tension of stitch on the machine so that all the tape came off while leaving the stitches intact, which needless to say I cannot doPlymtom wrote:Actually it may work better than farting about with pins for hemming, just sew straight through it then rip it off?sniper 55 wrote:Duct tape works well.... and yes before you ask I have done it. we do own a sewing machine but with so little space in our flat it lives in my "QM stores" out at the farm 20 miles away and there never seems (seams?) time to get to grips with it. A vital prep skill all the same

Invested in a modest sized safe/lock box that is airtight and fire and water proof. Installed this in a hidden area of my house and have put all my valuable documents in there.

Both of us are taking iodine and tumeric supplements to offset a little of the massive radiation spike that the UK and EU are currently subject to.
Bought some aquarium antibiotics for emergencies but since the tablets are salt based it will have to be an emergency before I take them

Got the bike maintenance stand and got busy changing my tyres. Discovered that although I can change tyres on the mountain bike I cant do them on the road bike which is a pain. Also discovered a broken spoke on the mountain bike and a serious problem with the rather old style shimano gear system that meant that I still had to take the thing down to the bike shop (halfords) after all. So I got some work done, but I couldn't do everything that needed to be done. An upgrade to the gear system was out of the question as the frame wouldn't accept it. However I now have much easier to ride tyres for the mtb for the spring and summer run about cycling which will take some burden off my bad knees.
Also highlighted an issue with brake cables and that will need addressing soon (but is still safe to ride) so tot he most part i am set up for local travel for the spring, summer and early autumn and have gone through some hands on learning on the way.
Really want to become a person who knows stuff about bicycles this year.

Nick, "Richards Bicycle Book", get a copy thats in line with the vintage of your machines, its the bible. Lidl and Aldi do decent bike repair equipment kits that are fine for home use though you may have to search or beg the correct cassette tool for older gear systems. The Haynes book isnt too bad either if you can find a second hand one at a decent price.

Got my replacement Fiskars Brush Hook delivered, the old model, for under 17 quid, delivered. Result. Was gifted a load of Picogynerol powder and empty capsules- its a natural anti inflammatory made from the bark of a french pine that grows around the med. Its well worth a try as its very effective without the intestinal damage of pharma NSIAs.
The mrs is building a stealth antenna for the CB basestation so I can stay in touch when out in the Rangey. Went to use my mobile yesterday and found all my credit had disappeared due to me not using it. And this with a company that promises not to to that. I thank my stars for my mrs and her many skills, including her ability to buy dead CBs as junk and get them running like new. All out of her £60/week careers allowance (that they deduct from my money, the gits) after paying full stamp NI all her life til she gave up all to look after me. The angel. With claws.
Waiting on parts for my two pressure stoves to get them and the tilley lamp in tip top readiness. The good work continues.
Oh, and I have a diesel peugeot 306 thats sat outside for a year to get rid of if anyone wants it, gratis.
