Hello everyone,
I am just wanting to do some winter food storage as i am unable to get out much in the bad weather, nothing too drastic, i have a lot of shelving a small freezer and am planning to add another bigger one soon, kitchen not a bad size.
so it is just some 6 months or so i am looking for. and some emergency stuff, nothing too over the top, i was a little worried re the grids and this winter being the start of the 30 year nuclear power switch over and some reports of shortages and power cuts, so i was interested in that sort of way of thinking.
Thanks. To anyone that may answer.

Hi Cornerstone, welcome, I suppose we would need a wee bit more info to offer more advice, are you on mains gas for example ? 6 months of victuals is a fair stash. One of the things I've found is trying to get a balanced and healthy diet from cans. I've tried to only stockpile things that we eat normally, I've stretched that rule a wee bit but if you're planning on using freezers it gives you a bit more scope. We tend to eat a lot of fresh (with some frozen) veg so I struggle to justify too many canned veg, I've got galloons of sweetcorn though, beetroot too. It really does depend on your eating habits, I've started using a dehydrator to do all sorts of stuff, there is at least one thread on them here, you can pick up a dehydrator on Amazon for 25 quid or so, maybe less now, I've got onions going as I type.cornerstone wrote:Hello everyone,

About the 'grid', I'm assuming you mean lecky ? You can pick up cheap camping stoves that are really easy to use for 9 or 10 quid, extra cannisters are as little as a quid a go. Amazon is your friend, some use other sites like Ebay, I stopped using it years ago but that's my personal prejudice, you can get all manner of torches, lanterns etc. Its quite good fun having a wee nose around, you might find all sorts of interesting things, unfortunately they all cost money.
Good luck with it all mate, there are a load of folk on here who know all sorts of stuff, it's quite a broad church here and I've seen threads about things I'd never considered, have a rummage, ask questions, I'm biased but I think this is a great site for finding out what you would want to stock for a long winter. Again, good luck with it.

Thanks everyone, i got one of those galley boat supply stoves, it is quite big, 2 burners and holds a gallon each burner of paraffin, the problem i had was the place i got it from, hurricane lamps scaled down and no longer carried the wicks so i had to search but i eventually found an online wick shop, 6 months is a fair bit i know the freezer lessens that and i have bread machines that make cake and jam so i have some done.
