I am never more than about 10 miles from my home, but I do keep a small grab bag in my car n some water and a little bit of food, I just have some torches, waterproof clothing and some things to keep me warm, a small medical kit and a small beargrylls pocket knife, hopefully that would be enough to get me home.

I have a number of 'survival' items stashed in the car, but not in a BOB. I prefer the grey approach, everything necessary to survive 72 hours can be held or shoved in pockets. I have a used mayonnaise catering container (free from my local pub) which has a lid so I can put extra stuff in there if needed and of course it doubles up as a bucket. But I don't 'have to have' the bucket.

I have considered putting a battered old day sack in the car, but essentially I want to look as if I have nothing worth having should SHTF

after getting stuck in some snow earlier this year and it taking me 4 hours to complete a 40 min journey home from work I am starting to put a bag together in my car well two bags in fact one to make things more comfortable if staying with my vehicle and a bag to take with me if I have to abandon my car and trek home on good old fashioned feet.

I don't drive, but my husband does. He is self employed and place of work is only a five minute walk from our home so not much to worry about for getting home... but I do want to have some survival items in the car for any trips we may make and for any reason may have a break down, get stuck, etc etc... Only thing is Im thinking how can I do this has I haven't got my hubby yet, (keep trying) into thinking about prepping. Im thinking of putting some items into the pockets at the back of the car seats, this way I don't think hubby will notice, but be glad of it if anytime were stuck, or if the SHTF anytime were out and about. So heres what im thinking of putting in the car for short term emergencys.

Baby wipes, tissues, small first aid kit, cereal bars, dried fruit pack, packet of biscuits, 2 fleece blanket`s, folding shovel, water bottle. Waterproof poncho. off to think about a few more things, my brains not working this morning... any suggestions welcome... :D

we always call for bottled drinks before we travel anywhere so would be okay for drinks.

It might be worth including some dried fruit/nuts possibly as something a bit more filling to go alongside the cereal bars :)

Folding shovel might be useful, but a folding snow shovel would be even better
Torch (or better yet two)
Large bottle of water (think 2ltr pop-bottle or bigger)..... Not for you to drink (although you could), but for the car
Cable ties and gaffer tape.... Don't leave home without them.
Bag to stuff your gear in if you have to dump the car
Rescue Tool

I don't drive either and I've been trying to convince Missus Deeps to keep some more stuff in her car, I did get her to put a sleeping bag in over the winter but having given a wee bit of thought to what she could carry without complaining (I'm talking logically, not what she would complain about  ) I would say the wee gap under the 2 front seats could quite comfortably accommodate some basic stuff. As for food, a couple of cans of beans and sausages or cheap ravioli, with a can opener, probably a 'standard' one if he's not used to a more basic one. Energy bars aren't going to cut it for a bloke and there's always the possiblity that he can heat them up somehow. Baby wipes/tissues are always handy, even if you don't have a baby and as has been said, a couple of litres of water and some way of keeping warm, you can get some pretty cheap (and in all honesty not exactly toasty) sleeping bags that are pretty compact and will take the edge off the worst of the weather. Its just a case of where you (or in this case he) draws the line, a torch or head torch with some spare batteries if you don't keep them in the car already and a wee multi tool will both be handy. The only remotely bulky stuff would be the water bottle(s) and sleeping bag and neither of these are overly large. Keep trying and good luck.

Edited to add, either a 'spork' or a cheapo set of cutlery to go with the tins and opener, we're not barbarians. :D

Having been stuck on the M42 by a vehicle fire for three hours and on arriving at the services found the fire alarm ringing and the building being evacuated, I now carry a picnic kit in the boot, which consists of a Picnic Kit, crusader mug, gas stove, noodles, cup a soups, tea coffee, tarps and at least 3 litres of water. It comes in very handy for an impromptu picnic by the river or a full scale road closure, the Police seem to be closing roads more and more after serious RTC than in the past. There are a few more bits and bobs like a folding shovel, several 10 packets of tissues and mess tins, it should be ok for 24 hours or more.

I don't carry a bag in my car but do have things I'd need to get home, I work 3 miles away from my house so it's not a long walk for me, from August I'm going to be doing a lot more driving for work so will be adding a GHB to the car then, in fact I might start working on it tonight.

My EDC -
Zippo
Swiss Army Knife
Keys
Cash Stash keyring with £20 in.
Pen
iPhone - I also want to get a prepaid phone with £20 credit for backup.

Extra kit in the car -

Migraleve - I get the occasional migraine, at least these give me a chance of getting rid, I would have to sleep in the car if one struck at a bad time.
Binoculars - Something my dad always kept in the car (very handy for his line of work), seems like a good thing to have, can spot dangers etc.
Antibacterial Hand Gel
Tissues
Green glow stick, seem to work well for 6 hours and dim but usable for up to 9/10 hours.

I also have a sleeping bag + cushion, heavy jacket, waterproof jacket and a spare pair of trainers. in the boot.
