OK, so TSHasHTF and you are bugged out or bugged in ...............

Now what do you envisage you will be using your 'blade' for on a day to day basis?? Assuming that you have managed to get to your knives as you clearly won't be carrying them with you on a daily basis ;-)

For me, it would be about food prep; fire starting; and possibly shelter building, for which a bushcraft style knife would by far be the best option, in my opinion.

The tactical blades with chisel points and serrated blades really do limit their practicality and day to day use.

Like I said earlier, maybe I'm missing something??

Yeo agree my mora would be my go to knife in that situation

or maybe my cold steel bushman if there be Zombies about :tinfoil

you will need 3 sorts of knives post SHTF, 1 a thin bladed knife for skinning and gutting (possibly a folder), a larger knife for general work(maybe a sheath knife) and a large knife maybe a machete type for chopping branches and sticks and general heavier work. a survival knife is ok for Rambo but it really only has one use.

Yep that is pretty much how I see it as well, although a good selection of each type is of course essential!!

Though I tend to keep a multitool to hand as well as a decent folder.

Opinel#8
Hultafors Craftsman
17oz axe
SOG multitool.
Sorted.

I've got all sorts of other cutting tools, but these are my go-to set

My go to set contains a OSS cold steel fighting knife a cold steel peacemaker a leatherman and a machete if needs must. Living in the uk if it all does really kick off I want knives that will have dual purposes I.e. Defense and offence not just utility. And as i mentioned earlier I am a firm believer with knives that you get what you pay for. A ten pound knife is not comparable in anyway to a one hundred pound knife.

I think a knife that costs ten pounds IS comparable to one costing a ton. Mora, Opinel etc. The Mora Clipper incidentally, is standard issue for the SAS and SBS.
The Mora and Opinel are also very easy to sharpen and keep sharp. No knife , whatever the cost,is any good if it is blunt. In my working life as a Butcher we use only two knives. A steak knife and a boner. They only cost 20 quid apiece and suffer more abuse than any of yer 'boutique' knives.

While we are at it, let's remember to retain legality. We all know what damage a knife can do, SHTF or not. Let us not be discussing offence and defence with said implements.
I suspect the Mods. will agree.

Hi jansman,

I agree that Mora and Opinel are good knives but no way can they be compared to coldsteel or SOG or ka bar different steel is used and edge retention the list goes on..... I trained as a chef in a former life and I will equate it as putting victorinox fibrox chef knives against globals or henkels there is no comparison the victorinox are good but the other blow them away.... As for keeping them sharp lansky is your friend....

Well I ain't startin' an argument, but we supply kitchens, and I ain't met a chef that can sharpen a knife for sh*t! We have two kitchens that send their knives to us! Been doin' ' the job over 30 years now so I reckon I have a rough idea.

If you are selecting a knife for offensive/defensive purposes, then I think you to get a grip and re-evaluate things. Any knife can be used as a weapon, but a wise prepper would never be in that position.

The Mora's are certainly a very decent knife and get my vote, they are way better than many of the far more expensive designer knives that are available.

Maybe a test to destruction is what is needed here? A mora against a cold steel peacemaker 2 let's say based around certain criteria? At the end of the day though we all prep how we want to and I feel confident in my choices so will continue in that vein until something goes wrong and forces me to change my opinion.
