These systems are ok but if your using a gravity based striker the length of the bar the hammer runs down is rather long. You could use a spring based system but here lays a problem. The trip wire needs to be strong enough that when a passing wrong-un walks into it, it pulls the striker back without breaking too soon. With this amount of strength in the line would this be enough to alert them to the trap?

With ease of setting and small size along with the line running over a latching wheel, its my opinion these and like lonewolf said with personal alarms, offer the best option of a mobile early warning system. On the more expensive alarms they come with a sounder box you can carry, so you will here them but not the perp.
