Snatch Landrovers

Post by Neish »

Greetings, recently got my hands on an Ex-MOD Snatch 2A Land Rover and was wondering if any of you have converted such a vehicle into a BOV or even use on on a semi to regular basis?

When I look at it in terms of a BOV here are my pros and cons.

PROS
*Armored upto 7.62 BALL (In that rare event you get shot at)
*Riot mesh protectors
*Runflat wolf wheels
*Surprisingly spacious inside
*Uses standard LR parts (except the stuff the Army added)
*Off-road
*6+ Person transport
*Steel Bullbar at the front incase the sitation just needs a shunt.
*Built on GOLIGHT on a motor inside the cab for use as a spotlight
*Patrol lights
*Roof hatch (Could maybe use it to access a sort of tent?)

CONS

*Weight, varies on how much is on it of course but still around 2.9 ton to 3.2 ton empty and would most likely get stuck in thick mud
*Low MPG, around 15-20? All depends on how its driven.
*Very overt currently, Beige along with camo netting so the gray man tactic is straight out the window
*Security (Easy to fix with aftermarket locks)
*Wiring (As it seems with most Landrovers the wiring runs underneath outside the protected interior)

Now the list above is how I look at it so far, you fellows may see it differently of course.

Bugging out is my last resort but I want to make it as safe as I see possible, my idea is to reverse it to the door of the house and open the rear doors and lock the front cab doors with the two dead bolts to stop anyone from stealing it. With the rear doors open I can load up extra food and supplies before climbing in also and locking it from the inside and climbing into the cab. All WIP of course guys.

if its what you want , then go for it .
just a few things to remember , theres not alot of 2a`s on the road , so the chance of scavenging parts if you should need them is at best , slim to none .
the low mpg would also make things a little more complicated if you had to bug out .
might be worth considering a defender , ok not bullet proof but a diesel will give you more to the gallon .
it would also give you options on fuel .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

Yea, I've read that a few parts except things like the kevlar are interchangable with standard defenders but I've not had to change parts yet. The 2a Model was refitted with a 300TDi diesel engine, so thats always good for like you said on more fuel options. Cheers!

Keep it chained down or some bugger will steal it for export!
Seriously holding onto the thing in the meantime needs to be a priority, I know a tree surgeon who has had to resort to chaining his down to a ground anchor overnight to stop repeated thefts even when the vehicles were immobilised so had to be lifted out of their compound.
If guns are outlawed then only the outlaws will have guns....

i can only say for myself , in over 15 years of landrover ownership , no one has ever had a go at any of mine .

moine would stand out in a crowd though so rather easy to spot .

Find a good chiropractor if you’ve bought a defender. I had one for about 9 months and had to sell it because 1 - It cost a fortune with fuel, insurance, parts etc. 2 - It did my back no good at all, despite fitting Mazda MX5 heated electric leather seats 3 - I was paranoid about it getting nicked, I had a bollard fitted, installed all the security bits and bobs and had a removal steering wheel and pedal cover/lock. Get yourself a pedal lock that is fitted to the floor on a hinge as the other type will do your back in keep leaning down to take it off or put it on.

On another note I’d love to have another one because they’re great to look at and work on but I don’t think my back could take it.
