Equipping a vehicle

Post by Medusa »

We have a pickup truck as we are campers and also tend to cart around firewood and other items. It has a roller shutter fitted and so we cannot fit one of the dedicated metal toolboxes. There is limited storage inside the truck and so I bought one of the swing cases which fits over the wheel arch, is lockable and removable. We already carry first aid kit, fire extinguisher, hi-viz jackets, warning triangle, magnetic warning beacons, emergency blankets and shelter, water, seat belt cutter and window smasher thing and toilet bags and my EDC has additional and duplicated items, torch, fire lighting stuff including tinder, power bank, cordage, multi tool and energy bars, tissues etc. I'm looking to stock the swing case with a few additional items and want a small stove in there. Would you go for a small Esbit cook set with gel fuel tabs, which I already have or a small gas stove that screws onto a cartridge or something else? Anything I am missing here?

I use the dragon fire ( improved) military hexi- type stove. It fits in a mess tin, along with metal mug, lighter , spoon and tea bags. Comes in handy when fishing.

I bought a Coleman multi-fuel stove with the intention of putting it in my car kit...... Now I've got a car again, perhaps I need to fix this prep-fail.

The idea was the car runs on petrol and so can the stove. I have a 10ltr demi-jerry that I keep full so all I'd need to feed the stove is a beaker and a funnel.

Depending on the car you can unclip the fuel filter outlet Easy enough and cycle the ignition to use the cars fuel pump to top it up

It sounds like you're pretty covered. I did carry a fold up spade during winter months but I haven't put that back in for a few winters now. Probably ought to as I'm just tempting fate really! I just bought a shewee and a couple of toilet bags to add to my car bag. I have a little hex stove, mess time size that lives in the holdall in my back of my ford estate along with a pouch of 3-in-one coffee sachets and some tea bags and hot choc sachets. The only thing with those hexi stoves is the little solid fuel tabs are fumey and really stink! If I found myself using it a lot then I would probably swap it for a small single camping gaz or my travel collapsible fire bowel and small tin of fire lighting stuff. (cotton wool/birch bark/tinder and some small dry sticks to get you going.) Mine is just for emergencies - only had to use once (touch wood!)

At the risk of opening one's mouth and sounding like an idiot... Do glass breakers and seatbelt cutters not need to be within reach of driver/passengers...?

The new Dragon Fuel ( which replaces MOD issue Hexamine) is odourless. Mind you,I like the hexi as it is cheap, and the smell always takes me back to my time working for Her Majesty in Belize.
