You can also make one out of metal mesh, the old pathfinder bottle kit used to come with a bracelet of stiff steel mesh that fits around the bottom of the bottle and you can then bend it to size to sit on top of a sterno, a mate of mine had one, I'm far too impatient to wait for a sterno to boil water but it does work.
A lot of people in the states make them out of something called hardware cloth, but that appears to be galvanised, I don't know if a sterno burns hot enough to vapourise the zinc but I'd be inclined to use stainless mesh just in case, it would likely be stiffer anyway.

Link to illustrate what I mean there, you'd need a windbreak if you're outside but you could easily make one out of foil if you don't have something suitable already.

Are we talking about expanded metal mesh? You can get that cheap enough in builders suppliers, theres even a titanium version around (no idea what thats used for though).

The ZEN STOVES site has a wonderful archive of all types of improvised stoves including downloadable templates. The gel stoves are mentioned here :

...which is a good place to start. Follow all the links in the header and all questions will be answered

I have these.

You will also find that oriental food shops sell them as well.

You can also wrap some tin foil around it as well if needed.
