tried making my own from cut down tins but cant get the air flow right

You can also make one out of metal mesh, the old pathfinder bottle kit used to come with a bracelet of stiff steel mesh that fits around the bottom of the bottle and you can then bend it to size to sit on top of a sterno, a mate of mine had one, I'm far too impatient to wait for a sterno to boil water but it does work.
A lot of people in the states make them out of something called hardware cloth, but that appears to be galvanised, I don't know if a sterno burns hot enough to vapourise the zinc but I'd be inclined to use stainless mesh just in case, it would likely be stiffer anyway.

Are we talking about expanded metal mesh? You can get that cheap enough in builders suppliers, theres even a titanium version around (no idea what thats used for though).

Thanks everyone Flash pan thats the sort of thing i was after.... (mrs andy has a pet hate of gas cookers / stoves) so its a stop gap for her if needed
