Introducing the proxy-hug..... I hug some random person near to me and ask them to pass it along, and you do likewise. Eventually the huggers meet in the middle completing a chain.

Have to admit I haven't fully thought it through.

But yes. After the year we just had, I'll never refuse a hug, from anyone.... though it might involve certain precautions....

Passing the hug, with permission of course!

I've found myself in the situation of work starting to affect me both physically and mentally. Shift work is taking it's toll after many years and I have made the decision to reduce my hours. We aren't rich by any means and neither do we have amazing private pensions for the future, but sometimes life feels more important than luxuries. Time spent with elderly parents and other family, being able to help with childcare of the grandchildren and the grand puppy , helping our son out with his business. Having the time to bake and cook for the freezer, dehydrating food I have grown and enjoying it rather than it being a chore. Having the time to plan and be more prepared and learning new skills feels like a luxury right now. I am currently building up the food and household preps as much as I can and preparing for next winter along with getting some essential and less essential jobs done on the house. I just want to be able to enjoy whatever time I have left on this earth and have the basics to enable me to do this.
Growing old disgracefully!

I remember reading something that stuck with me ( I think it was Richard A D'hart). All you need in life is clean fresh water, wholesome food, somewhere warm and safe to sleep and something constructive to do for body and mind. Not an exact quote but the gist of it has stuck with me and I can look at anything else as a luxury rather than a necessity because of it. I don't feel the need for mountains of stuff but do like to have the fresh water and wholesome food in abundance. Go for it Medusa, at the best of times, life's too short, right now ....

Agreed. Governments KNOW we won’t give up our lifestyle. That is why the placate us with their platitudes.

Like the start of the fall of the Roman Empire; Give the people bread and circuses.
Well Jansman, That's a cheery tone for the weekend. What's your estimate on timescale. 5, 10, 15, >20 years?

We could have a wager payable in Bitcoin :)

Back in Nov 2016, I would have wagered 4 years That's when I started prepping :) I was happy to be wrong all that time. Long may I/we continue to be wrong.
No idea on the timescale. Not even a guess. However, it was reckoned by Gibbons, the historian who wrote about the decline of the Roman Empire that the decline to final end took about two hundred years. Because of internal dissent, and dwindling resources, the Romans couldn’t push any further forward. On top of that was the constant attack on it’s borders by the ‘Barbarians’ as Gibbons described them.Dwindling resources caused the Romans to gradually retreat back to Italy, and its dominions were left to fend for themselves. After living under Rome’s rather advanced and civilised rule ( if you forget slavery and the combat in the amphitheatre ), the former Roman world entered what we now know as The Dark Ages. From this point onwards, the world never really moved that far forward ,technologically, until we started to use coal. The use of fossil fuel has been likened to human slaves doing the work.Coal, then oil, freed us from the hand-to-mouth,subsistence farming that sustained us up until the Industrial Revolution. You only have to look at under developed countries in Africa, whose populations survive upon subsistence farming.

For these nations, there is no time beyond basic survival,to get an education, then specialise, industrialise and lift themselves to our living standards. They never will. Our own standards will start to fall, and the end game will be ( ultimately) subsistence economies,as resources dwindle.

Covid-19 caused the Global Economy to effectively shut down. Those in ‘Good Jobs’, earning a reasonable wage, able to work from home, continued to do ok. Those in hospitality, retail ( and those ‘Hero’ supermarket workers are now being pared back), the ‘Gig’ economy, became noticed for their vulnerability within the modern economy. The Haves and Have nots ,if you will.Minimum wage workers, struggling to get by. A subsistence economy within our ‘developed ‘ economy.

The decline has already started .
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Robert Frost.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

Me.

Medusa, OH and I took early retirement a few years back and discovered that you can live well on a LOT less than those in the know say. Looking at our income, we were considered "poor" but as we have always lived within our means, we didn't feel the need to spend, spend, spend what we didn't have. OH now receives two more works pensions and, to his joy, this year was eligible for his state pension so now considers us to be rich. Just wait until I get my state pension as well! We now have more time to grow our own and follow our hobbies (I knit, sew, embroider etc etc. and he has his animals to keep him busy) The only downside to this getting older lark is that we have both developed heart conditions (which slow us down somewhat)which is not something you want to do in the middle of a pandemic!

Go for it!
