Re: Aquaponics

I kept tropical fish for a good few years - they take quite a bit of care and knowledgeable attention to thrive. I never really progressed past the "easy" ones. Tried a bit of Kratky hydroponics last year. Worked well for windowsill tomatoes. Did not work at all for strawberries or courget...

Re: Aquaponics

There is the high tech system but variants on this theme have been around for thousands of years. One classic system involved draining the pond, (harvesting or moving all fish to a fresh pond) and growing a crop in the remaining fertile silt. Then swapping back later. The crop benefits from the rich...

Re: Newbie Here!

Welcome to the gang. Most of us prep for the more likely horrors. It sounds as if you have already been learning from experience so are ahead of most of the UK. Have a look around. I think most topics are covered unless they are illegal in the UK which is a clear "No". As Arzosah said - sa...

Re: Waterbutt drinking water

Making water butt water drinkable CAN be done but it is a huge amount of work and special filters etc. Drinking water should be free of many things including bacteria, parasites, viruses, chemicals etc which is why it is hard to do. You can look at the specialist suppliers for aid work to see what t...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

Mine are healthy but dont like my alkaline soil - despite heaps of manure each year Which is a shame as my mob go mad for them & adore raspberry jam. Meanwhile growing salad is a waste of effort. I can grow it easy enough but no-one wants to eat it and it goes to waste. My perennial variegated k...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

Raspberries can get "old" and stop producing much due to accumulated virus diseases and the like. This may be why your legacy raspberries were poor. You may get a better crop by planting some new healthy plants elsewhere in the plot. And they don't take much work so help keep a section of ...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

What a nightmare! And so close to Christmas. Definitely get like for like prices to replace your stuff as otherwise your insurance will offer you the price of the cheapest equivalent & not what you actually had. If you have photos of your rooms still accessible, keep them handy as evidence of th...

Re: New baby preps

Start with the obvious (to me at least) If the power went out, could you keep your babe fed, warm and clean? Ditto, If the water went out... And if the shops suddenly went barmy (e.g. Covid) would you be struggling for nappies/formula etc? You may never use old fashioned cloth nappies for their inte...

Re: Prepping when ill or infirm

I think Jansmans CAB would also do very well as a general hospital/A&E bag. I could certainly have used the "wife" contents when we had to spend the night in A&E with Mr GB. He was carefully wrapped in a blanket in a freezing cubicle while I had to shiver. (The heating was U/S and ...

Re: Prepping when ill or infirm

Very wise words Jansman.

We all prep for what "might" happen. Age, infirmity and what follows is the one SHTF ertainty that we will al face and yet prepping for it sometimes seems to be the poor relation in prepping discussions.
