Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 7.

I grew garlic for the first time last year and was pleased with the small harvest, but planted it in Spring. I planted some in Autumn last year too and was worried that it sprouted too soon. Interested to red answers to your comment. Well I'm inspired to give it a go after reading this. Worst that ...

Garlic is something I really want to grow, I keep on reading autumn is the time to plant, will it just result in a later harvest?

Re: What are you dehydrating?

Hi, it was sucking the air out. It was an online video. Only tried a few but I don't think it is going to work. I'm checking every other day, but I'm not confident, so just using Masson jars for now after your post. The jars I tested were sealed, I'm just not sure if will hold. I have got a vacuum s...

Re: What are you dehydrating?

Thanks, I've since bought a £10 hand pump what can make use of jars with the button tops. I've put a small hole, covered with electrical tape and hand pumped to make an air lock. Going to see how this works on some test items (if I can get kids not to eat them). It's reassuring just a normal tight f...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 7.

My plan this year is to try to become more self sufficant, and make stores of food we like that's nutritious (my new dehydrator will hopefully help with this). I have been experimenting with this and enjoying it, and learning to be patient. Also trying to regrow some food from scraps in the window. ...

Re: What are you dehydrating?

Hi, I've had my new dehydrator for about a week now, so far I have made fruit leather, Apple and pear slices (these already have moisture in the jar: I have coloured moisture bags in them), carrots, peppers, courgettes and have celery on at the moment. I'm storing them in an assortment of jars and us...

Re: Cooking when the power goes out.

No not a hill walker, although I do walk the dog. We used to camp loads as kids, just not now. My youngest and I love the rocket stove, it's quick, low fuel and once you get it going it's great. It's more of a comfort thing looking for an indoor alternative (or in a shift batten down the hatches situ...

Re: Cooking when the power goes out.

Yourkshire Andy, I hope your mil makes a swift recovery. It was a long time ago as well. I'm more shy with groups and tend to be reading old posts so my name rarely comes up. The big gas bottles do scare me, but then so did gas until I got use to my blowtorch. I think that's one of my reasons for lo...

Re: Cooking when the power goes out.

Thanks. They look interesting, and I think my OH is a little more interested in my desire to prep (which means I can spend some money). It was way back in March I introduced myself. Just before it became apparent that dd1 couldn't manage mainstream education, so that became my primary focus. I will ...

Cooking when the power goes out.

Hi, I've finally managed to get back into prepping (life got in the way!). I have been thinking about cooking with no power. I have a few methods of cooking outside, however I'm trying to find a safe indoor method (mostly so I can have coffee which is essential, oh and feed the kids). Has anyone tri...
