Re: The age old question

I find it shocking that so many women aren't preppers. Men are "wired" to defend realtime, physical threats, e.g raiding parties, sabre toothed tiger and spearing an antelope at fifty paces. Women are wired to prevent abstract problems, illness, starvation, injury and disharmony in the tri...

Re: What preps are you doing this week? part 2.

I've got a supply of free shredded paper. It's for the chicken run and the used stuff composts really well! The fresh stuff is great on a bonfire. I've also ordered EHIC cards for the family (European Health Insurance Card) for our holiday. Go to NHS website. It's a short, easy form and you get the ...

Re: Gluten free Kettle foods

Several different types of rice and vegetable- based noodle I get all cook in 4 minutes in boiling water. Miso soup as well.Fresh fruit, meat and veg from reduced aisle and market. Go...

Message in a Bottle project

There are free "Message in a bottle" tubs you pick up from your pharmacy. Fill in the information form inside, then seal it in the tub and put it in the fridge door shelf. Put one of the emergency stickers on your fridge door and the other one on your front door. If any of the emergency se...

Great medicine for chickens!

I buy Harker's for my chickens. It's quite cheap on eBay and a small bottle lasts for months. It's actually meant for pigeons but it's brilliant on my birds. Just 3 drops on the skin one day a week for weeks kills all sorts of lice, mites and all sorts. I only dose mine 3 rounds a year. No chickens, ...

Re: 3 sources of water.

Happily, we have access to two streams and 2 reservoirs. Working in a lab I have filtering and distilling equipment, as well as iodine, sterilising tabs and Miltons. The floods from a few years ago taught me a lot. With regards to washing stuff, my only problem is drying big stuff, so I'm looking fo...

Re: Home made insulin

Being a lab technician, I can safely say this procedure could only be done with VERY specific equipment. You would also need the precise recipe and the resulting extract should be at exactly the right pH and concentrations. One serious problem using whole animal pancreas is that most of the pancreas...

Any opportunity to learn First Aid should be taken up. Remember, YOU and YOUR FAMILY deserve to be safe. I'm the only First Aider in my family. Licence expired now but over 20 years altogether from Red Cross and St. John's with "street" experience.

Re: IFAK

Brilliant work, Yorkshire Andy!! On the subject of First Aid kit, I just keep a few bits in my handbag: Triangular bandage, two stretchy bandages, one with gauze. A few plasters/ gauze dressing, burn gel, safety pin, saline, paper and pen. Most of the stuff I encounter is my daughter's friends falli...
