Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
A couple of years ago a customer asked me about moving a couple of sheds , well stable field shelters to be exact. They had to be moved about 200yards so I levered them up and placed round fence posts underneath and with a little bit of help in the muscle department we moved them with relative ease....

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
Incidentally , perhaps it was this thread and the discussion about slotted screws but this week I had a job to upcycle a couple of tables and consciously made the decision to use slots rather than pozis...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
If you aim to do the new base in sections you should be able to replace the floor without raising the shed more than a couple of inches. It's basically the same as underpinning a house. Cut the floor in situ then knock in a few wedges to lift the sides up a little leaving a section the size of the p...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
You've got to remember that not all pallets are created equal. The best ones for 'project' wood are the single use ones used for industrial deliveries (at work we call them materials pallets). These tend to have a 'fresh wood' colour (and sometimes smell) to them and can be of non-standard sizes as...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
With old slotted screws you can clear the slot out easily (of old paint and putty) and if you put your screwdriver in the slot tap it with a hammer it will often come out easier. Indeed. I've even got really old mangled , more like clutch screws slots out. What's left of the slot giving a starting ...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
I don't actually dislike slotted screws at least not when they are used in the "correct" situation. Hinges and door handles for instance I think look better with slotted screws even if all the slots don't line up. They also seem easier to remove than pozi or torx or whatever even when dama...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
The home-made palletbreaker doesn't bend the most of the nails too badly...... Home made pallet buster!!! Colour me impressed. I'm only half impressed with my palletbuster because it splits so many planks. Did anyone ever s olve that? I have a big box of salvaged nails. They seem the good ribbed so...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
I had to look up YMMV but I understand where you're coming from and I certainly can't despite decades of practice claim not to make mistakes. One other advantage of screws is that it can be quieter than nailing which can be a consideration where neighbours might be concerned. Till you break out the...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question
Always use screws not nails to join frames together and to each other (I like Torx rather then Pozi), but you can nail boards onto the finished frame. Interesting that. On another forum there has been a discussion over the relative strengths and weaknesses of nails and screws. Nails tending to have...
