Re: Knitters

Any old rice seems to work. I think it is actually the moisture in the rice that gets heated up so super dry stuff may be a problem until it has had time to absorb some moisture from the air. Wheat grains work too but are banned in this house.

Lil: I think the electric wheelchair would get less stares than sitting on the pavement  . So far Mr GB been OK with just a shooting stick to perch on but I can see that if things go downhill, he would end up in the wheelchair/scooter world. Better that, than stuck at home being bored.

Re: Gripseal or ziploc

I prefer ziplock. I find the Ikea ISTAD bags are sturdy and use them to organise craft supplies. They go up to quite a large size. I have also recently been pleased with the "Hero" branded ziplocks from Sainsburys which were much sturdier than I expected. I have been using them when curing...

Re: Cash or card?

Businesses that only take card may have to change their ways. This was widely reported a couple of months ago - the Nationwide also reported a 20% increase in cash withdrawals last year. https://www.retailgazette.co.uk/blog/2022/08/brits-are-turning-back-to-cash-during-the-cost-of-living-crisis-says...

Re: Allotment: Woo Hoooo!!! :) :) :)

I bought an "Azada" for the plot then disocvered that the Chillington hoe was identical and cheaper. Check boot fairs and any second hand tool shops or house clearance places for cheap garden tools. Ancient spades etc can clean up and give a lot of service. Just check how heavy they are be...

Re: Birch bark tinder box

I have attended a couple of workshops on harvesting birch bark for making this sort of thing. I live in an urban environment and somehow never seem to hit the sort of woods where I could do some harvesting at the right time of year. Maybe this year I'll get the chance.

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

Do you have a Lidl nearby? If so, keep watch for when they get their seeds in. Most years they start at 29p and I have had good germination from them.
