I'm rural highlands and I understand completely the power and communication issues.
I've always kept my heating separate from my electric. I used to keep the cooker separate too but now I have a small camping stove and bbq for use during power cuts.
Looking into ham radio later down the line.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Rural does pose its own challenges. Internet and mobile coverage is not the best. Definitely gonna look into radio at some point. I've always had multiple heating fuels here and never relied on just one. I have oil central heating and a wood fire. I always have a winters...
