Re: Uses for Flour.

If you are not much of a cook, a little time on You Tube looking at camp cookery videos might be a very good prep. To my mind, the easiest things to make with flour on a camping stove are fritters or pancakes. You will need a little fat and a good non-stick pan. I have no success with other pan type...

Re: New here

There are lots of similar examples from the Twin Towers to Grenfell. Being able to make a good & rapid decision and see it through seems to be key to survival. Waiting for someone else to take the lead seems to sometimes be deadly.

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

I am not convinced that is blight. I can't seen anything "fungal fluffy growth" and I have always seen at least a little of that with a bad/collapsed plant. All about blight here with pics. https://horticulture.co.uk/potatoes/blight/ While this is frost damage https://www.allotments4all.co...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

How warm has it been where you are? Blight is high risk when temperatures stay above 10 degrees for 2 days or more and humidity above 90%. April seems early for it. RHS says it is usually June or later. Are you sure those spuds did not get frosted? Frost can be surprisingly selective in which bits o...

Re: In the event of nuclear war...

Being in South London means that gettting out would have to happen incredibly early. The main routes snarl in normal circumstances and are also very easy to block if travel is restricted. There are only so many ways over the M25.... If I am leaving THAT early, I need to consider where I am going. Is...

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

The venerable Charles Dowding calls wooden edging a haven for slugs and does not use it. His paths are woodchip over cardboard which slowly rots into compost and is replaced as needed. So you could point out to your neighbour that you are removing the wooden slug havens on the advice of a respected ...

Re: Kale

I have the Daubentons Panache which is a variegated perennial kale. It has taken a year from a cutting to a solid 3ft by 2ft monster with a baby of it's own. Visitors think it is an ornamental. It is now big enough to crop so I will report back on what it tastes like - after picking off the snails w...

Re: Geiger Counters & Dosimeters

I think it all boils down to what benefit you think you might get from having a Geiger Counter. I was working at Philips in the eighties and got to DIY an early handheld one just after Chernobyl. The only thing I could really use it for was to wave over the lamb in Sainsburys which was a cuase of ta...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 11

Musical equipment doesnt like rechargeables as the voltage is a bit low. And the importance of sanity in a family musician cannot be over rated. I also note that the rechargeables don't seem to hold their charge as well as disposables, making for more work recharging some of my emergency lights.

Re: Advice for a hopeless gardener

I used to manage to grow cress as a 7 year old on tissues. It didn't need food for the week or so it took to grow. Possible problems Too cold - this will encourage fungus Old seed - germinates more slowly/unevenly letting fungus take a hold. Too wet - seed drowns. tisfsue or compost should be damp n...
