Re: Sweetcorn
You need to wait until the tassels have turned brown before you try the thumbnail test. I know what your dad meant about being posh when he grew sweetcorn. I'd never had it until I left home.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 9
We have tried several motion sensing lights but I couldn't tell you where they came from as we've had them so long. There is one on the landing and one in the hall so we can climb the stairs safely in the dark (or even find our way to the kitchen from the living room). It is very dark here on nights...

Re: Sweetcorn
We use the thumbnail test, if the juice is milky the corn is ready to pick. With sweetcorn, the trick is to have the water on the boil before you pick it as it loses its sweetness rapidly after picking. Once you have tried homegrown corn picked and cooked in minutes you will never go back to shop bo...

Are you sure it isn't real? I want one. Do you think Santa will bring me one for Christmas if I ask nicely?

Richard Mabey's "Food for Free" used to be a favourite among friends of mine although I never used it much and just stick to things I know.

GillyBee: the biblical "locusts" may have been locust beans rather than the insects. Nevertheless, I won't be first in the queue to try any.

Re: Health. Self help.
Some years ago I watched an anaesthetist on TV saying that he used acupuncture to stop his patients being sick after anaesthetics. He said he was sceptical but decided to give it a try. It worked! He continued to use it although he remained sceptical and could'nt work out why it helped but, he said ...

Re: Will More People Want To Live Off Grid,,,, and How Does this Sound
In the past we have had Wwoofers working on our smallholding but I can think of nothing further than using them as cheap labour. Yes, they work here but then I am putting a lot into their experience. It is not just a case of "oh, so and so needs doing so I must get some Wwoofers in to do it&quo...

Re: Cat-tail, a rich source of food growing wild
Mr A tried growing cattail but it is in the list of "fails". I think something else out-competed it. There is plenty of silverweed around here but it is at a level where dogs or sheep might contaminate it if you get my drift so I have never tried it. Nettles - we have plenty of them so the...
