Re: Uses for Flour.
What I'm asking is for any ideas for using flour to make a bread - like substance or similar staple regularly without using an oven, and which can be produced on a camping stove using a bare minimum of ingredients. Also, something that's very easy to make as I'm no cook. This is for when there's no...

Re: How to sharpen an axe
I recall watching some survival type US game show. Teams of people in a warehouse type environment building "escape" things. I recall one having to build a generator to charge power tools because "then we can cut wood and drive screws" The Colony, season 1. 1 old fashion...

Avon SSS didn't seem to work.... Deet did ;) How strong? I once had an argument with a store clerk in Aus once about the strength of DEET. I was asking for a stronger version, she said it can't go above 40%, this went on for a while as she became condensending. I pulled out a tube of 60% DEET, she ...

Re: Timberframe/wattle and daub
Some people might be more interested in helping the building rather than trying to live it. Worth checking out local trade schools, see if anyone is interested in having a go. There's usually some instructor too sore to do their trade daily but bored of teaching keen for a quick broadening of their ...

Re: Homemade weed killer
...the disposable dehumidifiers ...Water collects in the bottom. I'd read somewhere that the water is toxic and works as a weedkiller so I tried it out on some weeds on the patio and it does work. Downside is that I've no idea what's actually in it. It's mostly lye. It should kill everything except...

I'm the proud owner of some proper walking shoes, finally! Cost an arm and a leg, but there you go. Hopefully you get half off if they've one of your legs. Although I got a pricey pair of boots a decade ago before heading off backpacking Australia, they lasted over 2 years of very heavy use. Well w...

Re: Heat Pumps are Pants! Second Thread
As for my heating system, it's actually referred to as mountain heating, (as in drilling into bedrock, to get that constant 4⁰C) but saying geothermal usually saves effort as no one usually cares that much. It's at a 1:5 ratio of efficiency. 1 watt of electricity generates the equivalent of 5 Watts ...

Re: Heat Pumps are Pants! Second Thread
I haven't heard anything good about them from anyone. We have one and it's great. It's a geothermal (big tube and pipe 200m verticle nto the bedrock). It could be better (I'll say later) But for most UK homes any great pumps aren't going to cut it. You need insulation, as they slowly build up...
