Re: Questions about what folks think on the Comm's side of things

A couple of cheap chingling handies will allow you comms for short range, depending on your surroundings and conditions. Chinese handsets? There;s some rubbish PTTs out there that are not fit for any purpose. Better to get something with a reputation, such as baofengs. Forget allocated frequencies,...

Re: RAYNET

RAYNET is purely aimed at helping outside agencies to communicate in adverse situations. There is no "prepper" outlook beyond being able to operate as a radio service provider. (Which does include up a mountainside in bad weather for a prolonged period.) You won't find any interest in most...

Re: Questions about what folks think on the Comm's side of things

As a radio op in the military, CB after I left and now an M6 licence holder, all my comms is structured for qrp/p self contained. I can build a resonant antenna out of a couple of pieces of wire or other junk laying about, but power and looking after your transceiver is paramount. A couple of cheap ...

Re: clansman radios

Nowadays with the new battery technology I have swapped out the old Nicd cells for a 6amp lifpo4 and what a difference it makes in weight, as well as operating time. Still using mine and considering it was commissioned in 1979, its doing really well

Re: Home Solar System

Just remember fuse it fuse it and fusebox everything .. When you see how hot a big battery can get wires you'll get why it needs fusing  Also make sure that inverter cables are crimped properly I hope I have done enough for the fuses, I have a 200amp at the battery and an inline fuse from the ...

Home Solar System

With all the pending doom and gloom regarding energy prices and power cuts, I have decided to put a small independent solar system into the house. I am fortunate enough to have a flat roof, south facing and rather than have the space wasted, I will be putting in a 400w 2'650wh system. The idea is to...

Re: clansman radios

Just to keep the thread alive, I am still using the Clansman 320 and it goes on every field trip with me. It is a great draw for other HAMS on NFD and other events and its so different from the shop bought black box. Yes you have to work it hard to scan around the bands, but I never get tired of usi...

Yep, I can associate with this except I thought it was a "load of old T*Ts". Some of the guys at the local club had a proper old giggle at this

Re: clansman radios

The Clansman PRC320 now sits in the boot of my car and goes everywhere with me. I use it whenever I can and despite being limited in its power settings and no LSB, I have had some fantastic contacts using just the battle whip let alone the other antenna configurations available for this very versati...
