Re: Pallet Wood quality Question

I don't actually dislike slotted screws at least not when they are used in the "correct" situation. Hinges and door handles for instance I think look better with slotted screws even if all the slots don't line up. They also seem easier to remove than pozi or torx or whatever even when dama...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question

The home-made palletbreaker doesn't bend the most of the nails too badly...... Home made pallet buster!!! Colour me impressed. I'm only half impressed with my palletbuster because it splits so many planks. Did anyone ever s olve that? I have a big box of salvaged nails. They seem the good ribbed so...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question

I had to look up YMMV but I understand where you're coming from and I certainly can't despite decades of practice claim not to make mistakes. One other advantage of screws is that it can be quieter than nailing which can be a consideration where neighbours might be concerned. Till you break out the...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question

Always use screws not nails to join frames together and to each other (I like Torx rather then Pozi), but you can nail boards onto the finished frame. Interesting that. On another forum there has been a discussion over the relative strengths and weaknesses of nails and screws. Nails tending to have...

Re: Pallet Wood quality Question

Just to add pallet wood can be described as varied. There can be some that are little more than glorified firewood but then on the other hand I've had some that were a mix of hardwoods and useable for small pieces of furniture . Using the stuff can be fine. I've got a shed or rather woodstore that i...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

To be honest I don't know. When I used the old flour I tried bread simply because if it came out inedible I wouldn't have wasted anything else like butter , eggs or sugar. There have been another couple of occasions of old flour. One was when I was clearing my parent's house. There was a bag of flou...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 10

We had some tesco flour from 2020 that we've just used for (ahem) croissants of all things. It was kept in its original packaging in a closed plastic tub in the garden shed. Hadn't clumped like yours though. In a sort of prepping oneupmanship shortly after getting married in 2000 I went through the...
