Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 11

Personally my wife and I were brought up in houses where the heating was basically that of open coal fires. In between rooms you dressed! If you see films or programmes from the 70’s backwards you tend to see folks actually dressed ! Clothes on their backs. Yep, my parents didn't get central ...

Re: New to UK Prepping - Have some experience elsewhere

Welcome to the forum! That's a great first post. You're absolutely right that prepping in South Africa is really different from the crowded UK. So living in East Anglia is a good start you've made :) I'd be really wary of calling what you're doing "prepping" - I'd advise you to investigate...

Re: It's still about.

dizzydays - sorry to hear that, I hope you get over it all soon. I still take precautions - masked in airport and on the plane, even on busy buses on holiday. I've had covid once, and it took two months from my life. With the worries for long term health over repeat infections coming to the fore, I'...

Re: Uses for Flour.

I understand absolutely. As a vegetarian, it's a complete pain to have digestive problems in relation to cows' products! Goat and sheep milk/cheese are fine, fortunately. I'm lucky that I don't have a problem with nuts, or I really would be stuck. Still thinking about buckwheat, and I do like how it...

Re: Uses for Flour.

We have gluten & corn intolerances - we bulk buy buckwheat flour as this seems closest to wheat for many things and is a fairly good complete protein. Feel free to compare notes on the different flours and egg alternatives as we now have a fair collection of modified recipes. The one thing we h...

The consultant who got it wrong was standing in and isnt a specialist in hubby's cancer but its all they could get Some of them are so rushed off their feet you hate stopping them .the others who are getting it wrong shouldn't be there at all ... but if its all they can get we need wits about us Nu...

Re: Uses for Flour.

If using milk instead of buttermilk I would add some lemon juice. Buttermilk is acid which reacts with the bicarb to get the farl to rise. If using milkyou will need to add the acid seperately. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/homemade-buttermilk I don't use lemon juice, but do have vinegar, so ...

Or... https://hallans.co.uk/somayas-indian-grocery-store/ Yep, I've been to that store - it's a good one, with the online business attached, and the only reason its not my first recommendation is that naturally it focuses on the Indian subcontinent (and supplying every restaurant and hotel within t...

Re: Uses for Flour.

Agreed about the prepper doctrine of storing what I eat. This is what makes food storage challenging, along with the need to use and eat foods with a long shelf life. At least there's no "tasting panel"! I also use TVP, dried lentils and other pulses and beans. I find chickpeas take too l...

Re: What Preps are you doing this week? Part 11

Went for a fitness walk this morning, and used it to check on emergency evac route on foot towards my sister's house. Local conditions change continually - since I moved here 14 years ago (!) my town has increased from 25,000 to 40,000, and a lot of it is between sister and I, grrr. Found a nice cut...
