Why so many planes

Just wondered if anyone knows why there are so many jets, fighters, helicopters and the like flying about just now. Have noticed loads more than usual the last few days, both in frequency of flights and in the number of planes in each fly past. One large plane ( don't know what it was but it was huge and slow after seeing jets) passed so low that I ducked . I held my breath till it had passed as I wasn't sure it would clear the trees!
