@kizzie it sure is, how can China send their shipping cheaper, than the States, which is nearer!!! Ok I could understand it if you want it by air mail, but by shipping route though!!!
What gives?

Re: HOME CANNING
Ragdolly - where do you buy your jars and can you re-use those lids time and time again? The whole bottling/canning thing is something I've never done and neither did my Mum. Thought you could use the jam jars from bought jam, but it seems you can't re-use the lids. Don't want to ask any company, because they'll just want to sell any product they have on offer. They're not interested in you saving money using jam jars. Your advice would be helpful. I've got stuff going to waste because I can't use it and I haven't gotten around this tricky canning business
.
Re: HOME CANNING
Hi FEISTY, technically the disc part of the 2 piece lid needs to be discarded after it has been used, but you could always try and reuse it. We have done, but it has been a miss and hit affair. What food have you going to waste FEISTY? Until we get this business off the ground, jars will be pricey, but a cheapish place to order them from in the meantime can be found here:- http://www.cookability.biz/--home-made- ... /b_697.htm
Give it a try FEISTY, it's fun, and gives a great feeling of satisfaction/achievement.

I sometimes reuse old shop jars but never ever the lids. I buy new screw on lids online it would be a_waste if you didn't get a good seal for the same of a lid. Give it a go, I love home made jams, jellies, sauces etc etc

Re: HOME CANNING
So - the reusable lids are "tattler" lids but, as was said prior, I do re- use my regular lids. It's subjective right - if it fails to seal then bung another one on and process it again. You can get tattler lids through amazon.
It's easy for me to get canning jars as canning is a way of life over here and I can get them at the supermarket, right? Hopefully Daz will be successful with his E shop and you will all have access to this awesome abundance. If you did the math then you will have realized that the 4 wide mouth fancy jars cost approx 6 quid. I doubt you will be able to get such a good deal in the UK
The main brands here are Ball and Bernadin. Maybe give em a google

Re: HOME CANNING
It is fairly expensive to start bottling/preserving (canning in the US) and then you get into the details, get distracted and leave it for another day (ie, never
. I'm currently inundated with apples, plums (surprisingly - didn't think we had a good crop until they started to ripen and we could see them) and Pak Choi. Having a late revival of rhubarb, etc as well as a steady supply of other stuff. Sadly, once again, the birds and squirrels got all the cherries and gooseberries (big crops of both) because I couldn't pin people down to come and help cover the trees and bushes with netting ("I have dancing/I'm just nipping out to get new tyres fitted/I'm on the computer/It's raining
). I keep passing vast quantities of brambles (picked some in my own garden yesterday
) and rosehips begging me to come pick them. I will have to get to grips with preserving, as I'm planning to grow much more next year.
