Not done much due to car insurance been due and finding a blister in the side wall of one tyre. So spare wheel fitted and booked in tomorrow ....

However I did treat myself to a nice 12v led work light at the weekend

Decaff - Remember Freecycle. Sometimes people give away brand new fridges when they move into new houses. They bring their American fridge/freezers with them and the fridge that comes with the property is no use to them. Also some people give away working stuff when they just want a new one that looks shiny and new. Sometimes they will even deliver, but if you can collect or have a friend who has a van, even better. Hope you find a new job very soon.

Good luck with the fridge. Our local town has a non profit making centre which sells second hand goods for knockdown prices. We bought a fridge and had it delivered for less than fifty quid! Might be worth sniffing around to see if there is one near you.

I've just bought some of those super concentrated cordials, Small bottle, fits in your hand. Anyone who has drunk purified water will know the chlorine flavour begins to pall quickly. Shelf life 18 months.

As this part of my personal development is very much to do with health and fitness I have ordered myself some BMI measuring scales and a heart rate monitoring watch (which would probably look quite nice anyway!). The thinking is that the more I care for my health at this time in my life the better things may be for me as I get older. Hitting the big 40 this year is interesting, and it reminds me that now I have more leisure to be able to look after myself, I had better use it constructively.

We have all that gadgetry and no-one uses it. Spending money will do nothing to make you slimmer, fitter or better looking. I'm sure people know they're not fit without knowing their BMI number. Stand naked in front of a full-length mirror - like what you see? Are you fat? Is your flesh like blancmange? Can't run to the gate without sweating like a pig and having to lie down? If so, eat a bit less, eat more fibre, less junk and move a bit more. Do the naked test once a month and, unless you like what you see, eat better and less than the month before and move about even more, faster, harder. It's all very simple and the gadgets won't do it for you.

Bit confused over the fridge issue, our local charity shops have said they don't sell any electrical appliances because of safety issues?! We do have a centre where you can go and purchase furniture and white goods but you have to be in receipt of benefits to use it!!! Not having much luck :cry: I may have to check out Argos who have a sale on ATM.

Those cordials are brilliant, I have some in my stocks along with some powders that you add to water to make juice. Bolero mix bought from Amazon.

Decaff: Your research is correct lot of charity shops won't touch electricals. However its not a nation-wide thing, as if they have a volunteer with suitable training they can do their own PAT testing 'in-house'. So only some branches of some charities may accept and sell white goods.


Feisty: One small problem with this statement,
Do the naked test once a month and, unless you like what you see, eat better and less than the month before and move about even more, faster, harder.
A test based on personal judgement is how eating disorders can start......Whereas a test based on a third-party medical opinion is just going to lead to confusion. :lol:

Speaking for myself, according to a couple of BMI tables I've seen I'm either "Very Over-weight" or "Obese". As a 5'10" man I'm supposed to be between (roughly) 9 1/4 stone to 12 1/2 stone.... The last time I was sub 13 stone I was four inches shorter :shock:

Nick: Expect to be called in to your doctor's at some time, theres a scheme on to do basic heath checks on the over 40s.
Despite the extra four stone I'm supposed to be carrying, my blood pressure is exactly the same as the last data-point they have for me.....Fourteen years ago. And I have less the half the national average chance of getting cardiac problems in the next decade.
Diabetes, however stands a good chance of getting me (My father was diagnosed recently so my chances rocketed :( ).
Time to sort it

Yes, I would never give that advice to a teenage girl (or boy, for that matter), although I think the media is more to blame for putting unobtainable, photo shopped beauty in their minds eye, but from what I see of the general population, they have all their mirrors covered at home and certainly never stand in front of them naked for a full appraisal of the facts :lol: . Are you telling me you didn't know you were chubby before you checked your BMI :)? How long have you known your BMI? Has it made any difference so far? Just the point I'm trying to make is that the multi-billion diet and "health" industry just love having you spend all your money on all the garbage they produce with very little result (in fact, it's in their best interests for you to fail and keep coming back for more of their products) but a few decades ago, before junk food and door-to-door transportation, very few people were overweight or had Type II adult (apparently pre-teenagers being diagnosed now) onset diabetes, caused mainly by obesity. For anyone who is overweight, giving up fizzy drinks is the first place to start - especially the diet ones. You just don't need to spend money to be fit and healthy. If you really must know the numbers, book a health check and get them for free. Spend the money on quality food and a nice hiking/cycling holiday :lol: .

Just for info, some national charities have shops that only sell furniture and electricals - BHF have that sort of shop in both Southport and Crawley, that I've been to.

I definitely agree with Feisty that the first place to start being healthier is giving up fizzy drinks - and I'd add, replace some with water, certainly for a week or two - when you stop adding toxins to your body by stopping the fizzies, your body will want to start getting rid of the toxins you've already accumulated, and the extra water will give you a help in doing that. You might still feel like crap tho :(

Nick, your posts about watching and improving your health have always stood out to me, and I have to start taking more care of myself too - I too am reaching a round number this year, and my back is killing me with all this gardening, must do some core exercises. Thats a prep, most definitely.

I have had health issues recently that have led to me having to give up fizzy drinks. I've not felt like crap, so much as had serious cravings for fizz! It's really odd! I have replaced the fizz with water (lots of!) or Ribena (not very strong). Apart from the odd lapse, I've been quite successful and I do feel better for it. I just have to step up my activity levels - which is hard when I have a quite sedentary job.
