What Preps are you doing this week
Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Guys salt is the best water absorbant. You can put some rock salt (wrapped in paper or cheesecloth) in your stash.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
So oxygen absorbers and rock salt into the bucket! What a good idea!
Thank you everyone.

Horses for courses. You now have some info, your choice-both sources good. The difference between Feisty and myself is that I have no 'forever' storage. Mine is constantly rotated.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Hi Jansman, mine will be rotated but I wanted to get good stocks levels up and running first if that makes sense. Trying to build up a supply of food I will use on day to day basis and buy extra till I can store no more and then rotate and replace as I go. Just didn't want what happened to cat food to happen to my dried foods.
My job finishes at end of June so will be spending a portion of redundancy money on food stocks etc as who knows how long it will take to get another job. Its still grim out there job wise at the moment. The thought of my family being hungry and unhappy leaves me feeling sick to be honest so I must ensure I can feed us all without worry its going to go off before being eaten.
Thank you everyone for advice.

Hi Decaff. It is exactly one year since I was made redundant. The food stocks helped us enormously. I spent a good lump of my redundancy on stores too. Wise plan.
Good luck friend.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Thank you Jansman, I'm sure we will be fine but am going to do my utmost to at least make sure we have nice meals if nothing else!
Sorry for your plight and relieved that food stocks made it easier for your family.
I will feel easier once the stocks are in, logged and away. Will try to get six months worth of storable food. Jams and chutneys can be made easily as the seasons change and nothing will be wasted!

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
It is what *I* prepare for. Back then I knew it was coming, like you. Sure, it hurt, but not as bad as if I had nothing behind me. FortunatelyI got another job pretty quickly. However, the preps kicked in and have helped since, as I don't earn as much as I used to. In a way that fact has been a good thing, as My family uses stuff more efficiently than when cash was more readily available.
Redundancy has been a common thread here for a few years, and creates a personal SHTF. I think that on the economic front, those with mortgages (thankfully, I no longer have one)will be the next affected, as interest rates inevitably rise.
Were I still in the position of having a mortgage, I would ramp up my stores whilst cash was available. My experience of income loss, however short, taught me how valuable my stores were. In fact, I would say that my income reduction mahes it even more important that I store more, which I am working on.

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Great idea. I've not wanted to put the non food grade silica sachets I have in directly with the food, although they're really handy because there's no mess and they're re-usable. I can see Jansman doesn't need to go to the lengths I have to store dried food really long term - maybe I've been badly influenced by those American shows where they have food stores for 10 years or moreiSkynet wrote:Guys salt is the best water absorbant. Fair play to you Feisty for your effort. Me? I am lazy, simple as that

Re: What Preps are you doing this week
Added a few more tins to my stash.
Forgot to bring home the tins I was given at work, hope the cleaners don't bin them.
