Unfortunately the company I chose have been a pain in the rear from start to now. I wont bore you but, never again with said company. I hope it's all done and dusted by end of Sept.

They ARE messy(at times),they DO take a bit of work, but when there is a powercut, or gas goes up again, it makes you one smug git!
That's what I was intending too. :)

If the electricity and gas went Pete Tong I had another installed method available.

It will also save my lugging my Lavvu stove into the house and bodging a flue

If the glazing firm are not delivering, go elsewhere. Any trouble , go to Trading Standards.

Well, if the power went out tomorrow, I'd probably be able to use my new rocket stove - but the top is a completely Heath Robinson affair, which will definitely fall to pieces.

How do people finish it off, put something on the top to stop the insulating material falling out if you tip it to get the ashes out?

They make a lid out of the peace of tin that you take off the top Arzosah but in my case it was completely ruined so I went down to the £ shop and got a couple of aluminium roasting dishes and used one of them did the job just as well and I found that it was easier to cut as well :D

Genius! Thanks junmist, I'm passing a poundshop tomorrow, will do that :)

Other preps - checked out part of a bug-home route from my local city, and with my new local friend found tons of blackberries, plus loads of blackthorn trees bearing sloes - not ready yet, of course, but loads of fruit 4m train ride away, so hopefully my local ones in walking distance will be as good.

Well, I've just started on all this.

This week, I bought a 10 litre Plastic Box. That will be my Bug In Box.

I have a Snugpak Response Pack. That will be my Everyday Carry Bag.

I have a Karrimor Rucksack. That will be My Bug-out Pack.

Right now, they are all empty, but I will be stocking them and my larder at the rate of £5.00 per fortnight for gear, and £5.00 per fortnight for edibles.

Plan is - if at all possible, to stay put in my nice, warm, dry, secure, 2nd story high rise flat. If that's not possible, I will exit Bristol towards Bath, and then head south-west towards Devon and Cornwall on foot.

Given my budget is kind of low, being on benefits at present, I wonder what your priorities would be?

Best wishes, 2RM.

Here's a list that's served me well:

something to carry it in
something to sleep under
something to sleep in
something to sleep on
something to cook over
something to cook in
something to carry water
method of lighting fire
food and water
medical kit
illumination
wash kit
clothing
knife and axe
navigational equipment.

This will fit most scenarios, the type of kit will be budget dependant, but it can be done.

A high end water filter is in my kit, but I have a Millbank bag and a means to boil water as the low tech version.

Probably the most important bit of advice is to do your research then buy once, but buy smart, that way you dont end up with a ton of redundant stuff.

Back on the fitness track of things. Received my delivery of a cross trainer (about £85 from ebay). As it cost the equivalent of being in a gym for three - four months I thought if I used it for six months I would be quids in, and if I wanted to sell it and get my money back I probably could and thus saving me even more.

I went for the elliptical cross trainer as I had heard that it was a good cardio work out and also helped tone up the rest of the body. Also I can't do jogging for exercise because of my bad back and bad tendons (trust me, I tried, it wasn't pretty!). The elliptical cross trainer or elliptical bike is as close to a zero impact form of exercise you can get.

Once it had arrived it took me three hours (me being mechanically inept) to get it together. The main problem was the pedal bolts that were very stubborn and required a lot of work to get them to do as they were told.

I like it as I can use it in front of the TV, between work tasks and the like. Already I am feeling the benefits.
