Personally I can only see a real bartering need for a situation where things have really gone pete tong. otherwise I think money will still be the main currency just inflation will change the value. (or maybe I am being naive what with the black market etc).

If however a situation like that does occur, then I think bartering will be over a wide range of goods and items depending upon what an individual or group needs most. I imagine simple things like batteries will become quite valuable to trade especially as time goes on.

Lets hope it never comes to a situation like that.

I agree gold and silver is important for a economic downturn and would be helpful to store some. As in a economic downturn we may lose our jobs, paper money would be nearly useless and the banks foreclose on our house as we can't pay the mortgage. Keeping the gold and silver is a good for bartering to banks only.

I think having a good garden for selling crops, extra seeds plus a grinder to make flour and make bread, all the old fashioned way of self sufficiency and you can barter your produce to everyday folk. But you could be targeted then by people who will think it will be better to take the stuff then barter and even raid your stores and garden and you are left with nothing or even died.

All very good points. BUT....Qr, what the hell do you do for a living if you dont mind me asking? £1000 on this and £100 on that! i spent £12 on my kit a few days ago and felt guilty as hell!! HAHA

As iv said before i have a few disposable electric cigarettes to trade. I have mass amounts of alcohol around the house from gifts and birthdays etc that never gets drank...(all area 10 preppers who like a nice glass of something every now and then feel free to trade!) but i need to focus on my own kit and skills before other things. Its amazing how little gear and knowledge you need to be totally self supportive (for want of a better word) i know of a few people on here that are pretty much there so the knowledge is freely available.

Hope this helps!

I thought femine hygiene products, shaving gel and razors and baby food and milk, nappies and wet wipes would be good bartering items. If SHTF and I couldn't get hold of milk for my baby I'd do anything. All well and good having breast milk but if you can't breast feed or express your FUBARD. Also if you have a weaning baby and no electric it's difficult to blend food down enough to be suitable for a little one.

You can get UHT baby milk which has reasonably long dates on it I think. I can't remember how long the powder last but it would be false economy to buy big tins to distribute.
